Volcanic Nevis is known for its wonderful empty coves, lush rainforests, historic ruins and restored 18th Century plantation inns. Part of the island’s attraction is that it holds onto the Caribbean of old - goats still amble through the streets, local grocers announce whatever is in stock on a blackboard (anything from pig snouts to beer), and there are many good local restaurants to visit.

• To experience Nevis’s rustic architecture, enjoy afternoon tea at the Montpelier Plantation Hotel, in the restored 300-year-old sugar mill nestled in the hills.
• Take a private hike around Nevis peak, the dormant and ancient volcano on the island. With lush vegetation and the chance to spot a monkey or two, hiking is definitely a rewarding alternative to a days lounging on the Nevis’s coastline.
• Head to the Brimstone Hill Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site that is one of the best-preserved historic forts within the Caribbean.
