Tortilis Camp lies in the heart of Amboseli National Park and faces the foothills of Africa’s highest mountain, the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro. As you arrive at the camp, the view of its snow-capped peak and the surrounding plains will simply take your breath away.
This award-winning ecotourism camp has a well earned reputation for its commitment to the environment because of its rustic simplicity, unobtrusive design and attention to detail and comfort. The spacious safari tents are raised on wooden platforms and sheltered from the heat of the day by a makuti (thatched) roof. Each tent has a large comfortable bed and ensuite bathroom with pressurised hot shower and flushing toilet. The stone verandah offers privacy for those wanting to read a book or enjoy a siesta on the traditional lamu day bed.
Tortilis is a family friendly camp and the expert guides know how to make a bush walk or game drive ’come alive’ for young guests. Early mealtimes and a baby listening service are also available. Tortilis is perfect if you want to take a bush breakfast, watch the elephant herds following their ancient rituals, go on game drives, visit the local Maasai village, sip an evening sundowner or just lie by the pool.
Amboseli is best known for its unrivalled views of Kilimanjaro and the local elephant population. There are over 1000 elephants in the parks eco-system, featuring some of the largest in Africa. Tortilis Camp is named after the flat-topped, umbrella thorn tree, the Acacia Tortilis, and is situated in one of Amboseli's areas of Acacia Tortilis woodland, with the majestic backdrop of Africa's highest mountain, and the World's highest free-standing mountain, snow-capped Kilimanjaro. Game drives, walks, sundowners and bush meals take place both inside the park, and within a private 30,000 acre game concession
Accommodation
The accommodation at Tortilis is in 17 tents, all are large and spacious, with king or twin beds, elegant en suite bathrooms. There are 9 doubles and 8 twin bedded tents. There is one family house with a double and a twin room both are ensuite bedrooms and a private sitting room.
All rooms can fit one extra bed, for children under the age of 16.
Childcare
Tortilis Camp welcomes children although there are no specific childcare facilities. Food can be tailored to suit children and earlier meal times can be arranged where necessary. Babysitting can also be organised for those that require it.
Facilities
Tortilis has a large swimming pool nestling in the trees with comfy sun beds on which to relax between safaris. There is also the option of a massage from a trained therapist and the camp has a curio shop selling local arts and crafts.
Activities
Activities from Tortilis Camp include game drives in 4x4 open sided Landcruisers, guided bush walks, bush breakfasts and sundowners. There is the opportunity to visit local Maasai villages and interact with the local tribes.
When to travel
The only time to avoid Kenya is during the long rainy season in April and May. November is considered the short rainy season, however, these are less predictable and are much lighter. The best time of year to visit the Maasai Mara is during the Great Wildebeest Migration which tends to pass through the Mara between mid July to late October.

Tortilis Camp is located on the edge of Amboseli National Game Reserve, on the southern boarder of Kenya, overlooking Mount Kilimanjaro.
How to get there
8.5 hour international flight to Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta Airport, then its 30 minute by road to Wilson Domestic Airport. Scheduled flights from Nairobi’s Wilson airport to Amboseli airstrip take about 1 hour. Amboseli is a 45 minutes drive from the camp.
