Chicago is a fantastic destination most of the year around as there’s always lots of things going on in the city. Summers are hot and humid, with daily averages of 24 degrees, and winters can be very cold, which makes spring and autumn for most the best time to go.
Jackson Hole has five distinct seasons: summer (usually June to August), fall (September through October), off-season (November), winter (December through March) and off-season (April and May). Combining Jackson with Yellowstone in the spring and autumn is ideal for viewing wildlife, although the summer can be a wonderful time for those seeking that warmer weather.
Spring and Autumn in Montana allow for mild days and cool nights, whilst the summers offer hot days and warm evenings. Peak time at the ranch is June through to end of August but fall is a stunning time to visit when foliage turns the Montana mountains russet and gold. Winter is marked by crisp days and cold evenings, with snowfall creating a winter wonderland.

This itinerary really has it all. I love the cowboy town of Jackson Hole, it's got an incredible energy in every season and everything is quite extreme, from its epic mountain peaks to the wildlife and super volcano activity, to the people that inhabit the town. It is home to extreme skiers in the winter and extreme rodeo riders in the summer! I'd say three nights here is perfect, to soak up the ambience of the town, catch a local weekend rodeo and then take to the Snake River rafting or to explore Grand Teton Park with its giant herds of Bison and Antelope and hike around pretty Jenny Lake. I'd also recommend a visit to the National Museum of Wildlife Art.
Then heading off on a safari with Jackson Hole Wildlife Safari's is worth every penny. Their guides are so personable and go the extra mile to make the experience special. They know the back roads, the habits of the local wildlife and they can prioritise what is worth seeing. They are also tapped into local networks, where they can call ahead to find out if Old Faithful is due to erupt, or their guide network will call into them to let them know they've seen a Grizzly Bear, or a Moose wallowing in the water off-the-beaten-track. While accommodation in the park is basic, we work with the safari team to ensure the set-up works perfectly for a couple or a family, most of the park lodges don't provide connecting rooms and so forth, but we know the lodges that can! The feedback on this trip is always remarkable, with families having to tear their children away from their guides at the end of the trip because they made such a bond!
It is important to know that there is a lot of time on the road on these trips, when heading up to Montana, the distances are vast and so we do recommend this trip for slightly older children - or why not come equipped with some educational films on an i-pad for that last day heading up to The Ranch at Rock Creek.
The Ranch at Rock Creek is one of a kind, the most luxurious of ranches in the Rockies, nothing here is too much trouble. Get there on a Tuesday to watch the ranch staff put on quite the show at their weekly rodeo, and ask us about booking some activities for your first couple of days ahead so you get your first choice of activities when you arrive. Families will love the paint balling, down hill mountain biking course and archery. Although the riding is fantastic, there is so much to do here besides, the beauty of this ranch is that it is a wilderness resort essentially, so there is something for every member of the family to enjoy - whether its an existing passion or finding something new. The shooting at The Ranch at Rock Creek was a highlight for me, as soon as I finished riding, I'd ask the guys at the Rod&Gun Club to drive me up to the shooting range - so I could get in a few shots against my husband!

Yellowstone National Park Safari - Lower Loop
