Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

This itinerary is great year round, bar September and October, where the weather is humid and prone to storms in Los Cabos. While this might be peak wine crush time in the Napa Valley, our recommendation is to visit the valley outside of this time when it suffers less traffic and hotel rates are more reasonable.

Why not travel in the winter and wrap up warm for San Francisco city sights; cosy up by a fire and indulge in the hot-spring spa in Napa; and then enjoy perfect sunshine and world-class whale watching in Baja. Spring is a wonderful time to travel when March and April bring spring farm-to-table to Napa and whales are still found off the Baja coast (Nov-April). Summer time is ideal too with balmy temperatures throughout, there might not be the whales to watch but snorkelling, diving, golf, fishing and surfing are all for the taking.

Insider's View

I would love to do this holiday over Christmas, I would shop until I dropped in San Francisco, relax by a roaring fire and indulge in Michelin dining in Napa before flying down to Baja for sunshine, an ocean breeze and whale watching galore!

We work with a top National Geographic local guide for whale watching trips, snorkelling with sea lions, swimming with whale sharks and exploring Spanish Missions so you can experience the best of Baja California!

In wine country, spend a day with our guides; my favourite wine country day was spent with them exploring farmers markets and visiting local producers, touring an incredible biodynamic farm and tasting their premium vintage's before indulging in a 6-course tasting menu with wine pairing. Heavenly!

San Fran is a walking city, I love nothing more than exploring by foot... or jumping on a cable car if I get weary! There is always a hidden gem that you come across when on foot. It's also a biking city, as cliché as it might be, cycling over the Golden Gate Bridge is just something you have to do!

We design each itinerary around you, so this suggested itinerary is a starting point that we can tweak or transform into something completely bespoke to you. To start planning your holiday

Combine the vibrant city of San Francisco, the rolling vineyards of the Napa Valley and the Golden Sands of Mexico's Baja California and you have yourself a unique and unforgettable honeymoon.

  1. Days 1-4: San Francisco

This two-week adventure starts with three days in the colourful city of San Francisco. With three days to explore the city at length, you’ll tick off highlights and experience true San Fransiscan lifestyle. There are multiple ways to enjoy the city, and we can arrange food tours, bicycle tours and tickets to the hottest sports games in town. Jump onto a cable car to journey to Ghiradelli Square, Union Square and Nobb Hill, board the ferry and venture across the water to Alcatraz Island, and chow down on clam chowder at Pier 39, right next to the resident sea lions.

    Accommodation: Hotel Vitale (3 nights)

  2. Days 4-8: Napa Valley

Next, pick up your convertible and cruise north to wine country, to the sun dappled vineyards of the Napa Valley. Stay at Solage Calistoga with its hip modern farm aesthetic, award-winning Michelin- rated restaurant Solbar and sublime Spa that revives guests with geo-thermal hot springs and its signature Mud Bar!

Whether you would like to learn to cook farm-to-table on a local ranch or dream of drinking vintage Opus One on the terraces of their estate, we can help tailor your wine experience with our partners in the valley. Napa is a true mecca for food lovers as well as wine; from Michelin starred dining, tasting local cheeses in the Oxbow Market to cycling around local vineyards with a gourmet picnic lunch, Napa offers an indulgent culinary experience.

Accommodation: Solage, Auberge Resorts Collection (4 nights)

  3. Days 8-14: Los Cabos, Baja California

Next it is onto Mexico. A short 3-hour direct flight takes you straight to Los Cabos, where you'll be whisked straight to A-lister favourite The Cape, A Thompson Hotel.

Situated on a secluded beach, The Cape is impeccably designed to embrace its cliffside environment with contemporary architecture and spectacular sweeping vistas of the crashing waves below. Suites and offer sunset strewn views and beautiful private balconies inviting you to chill out in style after a day at the beach. The Ledge Restaurant showcases the best of modern Mexican cuisine, the rooftop bar provides guests with a space to unwind with a handcrafted cocktail each evening and the Manta Restaurant is perfect for those wishing to indulge in fine cuisine created by internationally acclaimed chef Enrique Olvera.

Baja's Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez invites ocean adventures; from surfing, diving and snorkelling to sport-fishing, exploring coral reef marine reserves and world-class whale watching (Nov-April).

For culture vultures, don't miss exploring the town of Todos Santos, rich in Mexican art, culture and music, walking the streets of El Triunfo, an old silver mining town, or visiting crumbling Missions further north. With a rich culinary scene in Los Cabos and wine from Valle de Guadalupe set to be the next Napa Valley in its success, this itinerary offers everything for the foodie and more.

Accommodation: The Cape, A Thompson Hotel (6 nights)

Maudie Tomlinson (Staff)

In September I was lucky enough to trail this trip all in the name of research. It's such a fantastic mix of an iconic city, incredible food and wine and the beach. I also love the contrast between the Californian and Mexican cultures - two of my favourite places for food, scenery and people. Highlights of this trip for me were dancing in Union Square to an impromptu Friday night band, tucking into fresh crab at Fisherman's Wharf, spending the morning in the Spa at Solage (the Mud Bar is a must!); touring the valley sipping pinots and chardonnays with a wine expert; and in Mexico swimming with whale sharks, a fresh Lobster with Mole feast at Las Ventanas and taking a morning jog on their empty Pacific beach with no one else around!
