Ferghana Valley
Stretching right across Central Asia, circled by mountains and fed by several major rivers, the Ferghana Valley is the agricultural heartland of Uzbekistan. Thanks to its position on the ancient Silk Road, artisanal silk production is still a vital source of economy, along with handmade ceramics from Rishtan. Ethnically diverse, the Ferghana Valley is also a melting pot of culture and tradition.
Encircled by the Tian Shan Mountains to the north and the Gissar-Alai range to the south, the Ferghana Valley is the center of Silk Road’s arts and crafts production. Visit traditional silk workshops to learn how this ancient handmade material is spun, dyed and woven into beautiful regional textiles, and travel to the small town of Rishtan where master craftsmen produce the distinctive blue-green glazed ceramics, prized the world over. The 22,000 square kilometers of flat plains fed by the Syr Darya River have turned the Ferghana Valley into the agricultural heartland of central Asia, in turn transforming the valley the most densely populated region in Uzbekistan.
