Getting into the redwood forest has been likened to visiting a great cathedral. The redwood forests of cool northern California are a reminder that we are just passing through. Easiest to access are Muir Woods near San Francisco.
Cross the Golden Gate Bridge, have a waterfront lunch in Sausalito, then continue on to a quiet secluded valley where the giants lurk. Stroll among three-hundred-foot trees for a truly spiritual experience.
Muir Woods is located 11 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Take Highway 101 North; Take the Mill Valley/Highway 1/ Stinson Beach Exit; Follow the signs to Highway 1; Follow the signs to Muir Woods. There are entrance fees into the park but check ahead as these regularly change and sometimes they offer Fee Free Days when the entrance fees are waived. Parking is free and children 15 years and younger have free admission. The Muir Woods Visitor Center has information about the park including brochures, maps of the area, and trail conditions.
