A Day in North Kohala, Big Island
Big Island, Hawaii, United States of America
A day in this beautiful area of the North of Big Island takes you back to a bygone day of old Hawaii. Visit the charming small town, go zip lining, take a horse ride, kayak historic ditches or hike down to a gorgeous black sand beach
Hawi is less than an hour's drive from most Kona coast hotels along the coastal road. It's like taking a step back though as you leave the resorts behind and drive through small towns and then on into rainforest scenery as you literally drive to the end of the road.
Start with a bracing walk down to Pololu Beach. It's around 15 minutes downhill on a steep trail to this pristine black sand beach, surrounded by cliffs and rainforest and is an incredible way to experience the scale of just one tiny part of this volcanic island. Take it easy walking back, it’s a steep walk so take your time and stop in the shade along the way and take plenty of water.
Next head back along the road toward Hawi, perhaps stopping for famous Hawaiian "shaved ice" along the way or maybe some banana bread. Then you could head to one of the ranches for a scenic horse ride or for those more adventurous, the Kohala ziplining is here with 9 ziplines running from tree to tree. Or perhaps a kayaking trip along the 110 year old ditches through pristine forest.
If time allows, stop in Hawi for some lunch at the Kohala Coffee Mill and a little gift or gallery shopping along the way before returning back along the coast in time for sun set on a beach along the way.
