Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Tanzania is a large country, with a varied climate. Generally, the long rains run from March to May - the temperature is warm and the humidity is high. June to October is the long dry season, and the short rains are in November and December, much lighter than the long rains. January and February are again dry (the short dry season) so this is another good time to visit.

December to March, is the Wildebeest calving season. In April and May, the rut begins and the plains dry out so the herd begin the journey north. June and July, the migration gathers momentum and the herds enter the Serengeti Western Corridor. It's here that the wildebeest and their newborn calves meet their first serious barrier in the form of the Grumeti River and its vast crocodiles. Between August and November, the migration reaches its northern range: the grasslands on either bank of the crocodile-infested Mara River which the herds must cross not once, but twice, as they complete their migration.

Description

Kichuguu Camp is conveniently located within Tarangire National Park. This camp offers up excellent service and gourmet Tanzanian cuisine along with a creative design based around the unique structure and ecosystems of the termite mounds in the area.

Kichuguu means termite mound in Swahili and Kichuguu Camp's design has been focused around this. Situated a 45-minute drive from the Tarangire Gate and a 5-minute drive from the airstrip, the camp has a great location.

There are nine tents in total with king, twin and triple configurations all with private verandas and en-suite bathroom facilities with a safari-style bucket shower. A butler service is on hand in the morning to bring you a choice of tea or coffee to your tent before you set off on your morning game drive. The camp's electricity is supplied by solar power, with a back up generator. The main area consists of a dining and lounge area with camp fires during the evening. With a focus on being eco-friendly, apart from being solar-powered, the camp also uses recycled plastic decking in the main areas, recycles tin and plastic and uses organically grown produce when available.

7/10 - a nice camp in a great location but lacks distinguishing features such as anything else to do during the day. The standard tents have great views and are spacious and airy for a tented camp, with well thought out touches like wellies for the rains. However, the family tent is pretty poor with dark, small bedrooms, no views and a lounge that feels like a waiting room with ugly hard furniture. The standard tents and dining area/lounge are also looked down upon by the staff quarters and are clearly visable, which is a very poorly thought out camp layout. Despite its flaws, its very good value for money considering where it is.

Vacation Ideas

  • Imagine Tanzania

    Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti and Zanzibar

    from $8800 pp 14 nights

    • We have customized this trip for you with the bonus of a private guide and safari vehicle. You will have so much flexibility to enjoy this country at your own pace.
    • Whilst you are in the Serengeti, you will stay at mobile camps that follow the migration throughout the year, which will heighten your chances of seeing this spectacle.
    • The north of the Serengeti is where you will see the mighty river crossings in migration season. However, with the abundance of big cats and impressive rocky outcrops, we think this region is a highlight at any time of year.
