Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

As construction of the hotel is subject to the whims of Mother Nature, an exact time frame cannot be guaranteed, but the Ice Hotel usually remains open to guests from December through to April when the hotel closes to allow the thaw back into the River Thorne. The Treehotel is open all year round but is best visited either in winter to enjoy the best of the winter activities and to see the Northern Lights, or in spring when you can enjoy lovely walks along the Lule river and hiking in the surrounding areas.

The Ice Hotel - Treehotel combination has recently climbed to the top of the bucket-list for the adventure traveler. The Northern Lights has to be one of nature's most incredible light spectacles and the extraordinary accommodation just adds to the show.

  1. Days 1-4: Swedish Lapland

The first stop of this once in a life time adventure is the Ice Hotel located in the very north of Sweden in a small village called Jukkasjärvi - home to 1100 inhabitants and 1000 dogs! Remodelled each year from ice blocks garnered from the river Torne, ice sculptors are handpicked to design an art suite each. They spend weeks mastering their sculptures using "snice" - an art that involves creating a cement from ice and snow and welding it together with water which turns to ice fusing the structures together. You can really get a taste of life in Lapland with husky-sledding, horse treks, snowmobiling, meeting the Sami people who are indigenous to Lapland, and of course, searching for the Northern Lights. Spend one night in the Ice Hotel's beautiful cold accommodation and then move to one of their warm chalets or hotel rooms.

    Accommodation: Ice Hotel (3 nights)

  2. Days 4-6: Swedish Lapland

Next stop is the imaginative Treehotel - catch a train or take a private transfer 3 hours 45 minutes south of Kiruna to reach your very own treehouse. Spend the night perched high in the canopy of the forest of Harads and expect incredible sunrises and sunsets from one of the seven uniquely designed rooms. A warm and homely welcome at Britta’s Pensionat will be waiting for you as well as delicious food, traditional Swedish fare, and a wonderful variety of winter activities ranging from relaxing in the tree sauna to action-packed speedy horse-pulled skiing!

    Accommodation: Treehotel (2 nights)

  • Husky dog sled ride

A trip to Lapland would not be complete without an encounter with some furry huskies. Meet the huskies and their owner and watch them be harnessed before taking off on a thrilling sled ride on forest trails.

  • Ice sculpting at Ice Hotel

A must-do when staying at the iconic Ice Hotel, try carving an ice sculpture of your own in an introductory sculpting class. Using the same ice as the hotel is made from, you'll learn the techniques and then be able to test your creativity!

  • Snowmobile Northern Lights tour at Treehotel

Take a snowmobile across the snowy landscape in search of the Northern Lights. Once darkness has fallen, head away from the lights of the Treehotel and towards the Lappish wilderness. If the weather is clear, you will hopefully see the Lights dancing!

  • Snowshoe hiking from Arctic Bath hotel

Explore the wilderness of Swedish Lapland by one of the more traditional methods of transport - snowshoes! Your private guide will teach you how to walk before leading you into the Taiga forest where wild moose and reindeer reside.

  • Wilderness dinner at Ice Hotel

Enjoy a one-of-a-kind dinner underneath the night sky at Ice Hotel's secluded wilderness camp. Your chef will serve up a delicious three-course dinner of local specialties while you relax on reindeer skins, looking out for the elusive Northern Lights.

Swedish Lapland

The Ice Hotel is built each year on the banks of the River Thorne in the small village in Lapland called Jukkasjarvi, 200 km north of the Arctic Circle. The Treehotel is situated in the forest of Harads 1-hour 30-minute drive from Luleå.
