Sintra is awash with captivating old houses, many of which now host handicraft shops and bakeries where you can sample the famed pastries. A particular highlight is the Quinta da Regaleira, a Romantic palace boasting stunning architecture and eclectic, otherworldly gardens.

After exploring Sintra, returning to Lisbon brings you along the 'Marginal' road which runs parallel to the white sandy beaches of the coastline and the 17th-century fortresses of Estoril. You'll make your way through the coastal town of Cascais, once a small fishing village, which retains the charm of the old seafaring tradition while the royal influences of the 19th and 20th century inhabitants are evident in the aristocratic houses.
