Salalah, and the Dhofar region in general, has its own microclimate with the 'khareef', or southeast monsoon, hitting the area from mid-June to mid-September. The result is that the Dhofar region is lush and green during and for some time after the khareef. The best time to visit is at the end of September and during October as the climate is not too hot, the rains should have passed, and temperatures are in the high-20s to low-30s, but the lushness remains making the area beautifully green. Temperatures in this area don't rise much above the low-30s meaning that it is bearable year-round.
To start planning your vacation to Salalah Rotana Resort
The newest luxury resort in the region, the Salalah Rotana offers both a relaxing place to unwind and a great base from which to explore the surrounding area.
Despite having 400 rooms and suites, the layout of the Salalah Rotana makes it feel much more village-like than you might expect from a large resort. The rooms are built in 'clusters' which are spread out across the resort, and the resort itself is interwoven with lagoons, water features and man-made canals.
The rooms are contemporary and very spacious, with Arabic design flourishes, such as arched windows and wooden latticing. All enjoy their own balcony and terrace, as well as modern amenities including air conditioning, an in-room safe and satellite TV. Premium rooms offer even more space, and the suites are enormous with the Two-Bedroom Family Suites providing a fantastic option for those traveling with children.
There are two large swimming pools, tennis courts and a spa, which offers a wide range of treatments. The Flipper's Kids Club is open for children aged 3-12 and will keep them busy with fun activities such as face painting, watching movies, crafts and playing on Playstations, as well as plenty of sports and adventure.
The resort is set on the shore of the Indian Ocean and has a lovely beach. If you are up early enough, or take a stroll down in the late afternoon you may be lucky enough to spot a pod of dolphins leaping out the waves on their way past.
There are three restaurant options to choose from. Saffron is the resort's all-day dining restaurant and offers an international buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner. East meets West at the Silk Road, which serves cuisine from South East Asia, India, Arabia and Europe. It is also possible to dine at the Beach Bar & Restaurant whilst sipping on delicious fresh juices, cocktails and iced drinks. The Arabesque Lounge & Terrace in the main lobby provides a relaxed atmosphere for coffees, teas, pastries and snacks.
The 400 rooms and suites are either nearer the pool or have a ocean view. All are spacious and have a private balcony or terrace. The design is modern but includes Arabic features which add character.
Suites have large living rooms and two bathrooms and the Two-Bedroom Family Suites have a king size bed and twin beds.
The Flipper's Kids Club is open for children age 3-12 from 10.00am until 7.00pm. There are plenty of fully supervised activities, including fishing, sports, crafts and Playstations.
There are two large swimming pools and a very nice beach, as well as tennis courts and a spa.
Whilst the resort is a great place to relax and unwind either by the pool or on the beach, it is also in a good location to explore the rest of Salalah.
Salalah has a unique climate compared to the rest of Oman. During summer when the rest of the country is extremely hot, Salalah is in monsoon season, with cloudy skies and rainfall which turns the hills and fields leading down to the sea a luscious green. This tropical climate means bananas and coconuts are grown in the region and can be sampled from roadside stalls and garden farms.
There are also a number of historical sites to be explored, such as the ruined city of Samhuram and the site of the Prophet Job's tomb. Within the city itself visitors can admire the beautiful Shanfari Mosque, enjoy the bustle of the camel meat market and wind their way though the Al Husn Souq, where the region's famous frankincense is sold.
