Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The climate in New Zealand is incredibly pleasant, with warm and balmy summers and cold crisp winter months with wonderful clear, blue skies. The warmer high-season months of November to April are perfect for outdoor exploration. The colder months of June to August are the best time to ski.

Both North and South Islands are drier on the east coast, rather than on the west, where mountain ranges act as a trap for the moisture-rich winds from the Tasman Sea. It is also worth remembering that it is usually a few degrees cooler on the South Island than the North Island and as New Zealand has a maritime climate, the weather can change rapidly.

This itinerary will take you and your family on the ultimate adventure through New Zealand, staying at a wide variety of lodges, ranging from luxury wilderness to charming Homesteads.

  1. Days 1-2: Auckland

Starting in Auckland, take in the sights of this harborside city and its surroundings as you relax after your flight. The best thing about Auckland is that it’s a compact city so getting around by foot is one of the best ways to explore. Head down to the vibrant harbor area exploring the many waterside café’s and restaurants that line the parade or take to the water and explore the artistic hub of Devonport, just a short ferry ride across the harbor. For views far and wide over the Hauraki Gulf scale the imposing Sky Tower and be rewarded with 360 degrees on a clear day allowing you to see the many islands that dot the landscape.

Accommodation: Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour (1 night)

  2. Days 2-5: Bay of Islands, North Island, New Zealand

Next take a short flight north to the breath-taking Bay of Islands in Northland, one of New Zealand’s most historic regions. Beginning your exploration of New Zealand here offers you the chance to learn about the history of the country and the Maori people, setting the scene for the rest of your Kiwi adventure. Visit the award-winning Waitangi Treaty Grounds, the official birthplace of New Zealand and explore the fascinating interactive museum or take to the calm waters to sail or kayak around the empty inlets and bays. We have included an exhilarating dolphin discovery cruise where you will circumnavigate the islands in search of these majestic creatures and other marine life.

    Accommodation: Eagles Nest (3 nights)

  3. Days 5-6: Auckland

Next you will return to Auckland for one night before collecting your hire car and continuing your exploration of the North Island.

Accommodation: Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour (1 night)

  4. Days 6-9: Central North Island

Head south out of Auckland through the rolling hills and farmlands of the Waikato region. Driving in New Zealand is scenic and with no multi-lane roads many find driving one of the best ways to witness the real New Zealand at a leisurely pace. Your destination is Taupo, home to the largest freshwater lake in New Zealand and the renowned Poronui Lodge. With over 100 miles of roads and tracks, Poronui Lodge has the most fantastic facilities for horse rising, mountain biking, clay pigeon shooting and rafting and will keep one and all entertained. Should you wish to explore the surrounding area the geothermal town of Rotorua is a mere one hours drive away. Rotorua offers bubbling mud pools and exploding geysers and we can arrange a guided tour around one of the best geothermal parks here, Te Puia. Alternatively, adrenalin junkies might like to partake in an exhilarating sky-dive over Lake Taupo, larger than the size of Singapore – the ultimate adventure activity.

Accommodation: Poronui Luxury Lodge (3 nights)

  5. Days 9-11: Marlborough and Nelson

After flying from Rotorua to Nelson via Wellington collect your car hire and drive towards Abel Tasman National Park and your overnight accommodation. For the outdoor-loving family, Abel Tasman offers it all.  A mecca for cycling, kayaking and sailing and the sunniest area of New Zealand, Abel Tasman will offer activities for the whole family to enjoy but one of the best ways to explore the region is out on the water.  We’ve included a scenic guided wildlife cruise showcasing the very best this coastal region has to offer. Head to Tonga Island Marine Reserve to see native New Zealand fur seals basking in the sunshine before enjoying a light lunch in one of the parks sheltered bays.

Accommodation: Te Koi the Lodge at Bronte (2 nights)

  6. Days 11-13: Kaikoura

The next destination on your exploration of New Zealand is the coastal settlement of Kaikoura on the east coast. Home to a huge variety of marine life from Sperm whales to orca and often referred to as the marine serengeti of New Zealand naturally we have included a whale watching trip which will see you head out into the rich abundant waters in search of a wide variety of marine life. With a 95% chance of viewing marine life here, Kaikoura is the number one choice in the country for adrenalin pumping whale-watching experiences.

    Accommodation: Hapuku Lodge (2 nights)

  7. Days 13-17: Queenstown

After returning your hire car in the neighboring city of Christchurch, catch a short flight to New Zealand’s adventure capital Queenstown in the heart of Mt Aspiring Park. Here- adventure awaits and many bucket-list activities can be enjoyed here. From canyon swimming to bungee jumping, jet boating to river rafting, Queenstown offers a plethora of activities sure to get the adrenaline pumping.  Included is a full day tour of the area tailored exactly to you and your family’s requirements. Enjoy the wineries of the Central Otago region or explore the Lord of the Rings film sets on an exhilarating 4WD journey through the dramatic landscape. You could opt to visit the neighboring gold-panning town of Arrowtown or alternatively enjoy a more sedate cruise along beautiful Lake Wakatipu – the choice is yours.
