Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

If you're visiting Namibia, the best thing to do is avoid their summer, which is extremely hot. Therefore, the best time to visit Namibia is in winter (May-September) but bear in mind that the desert regions can be bitterly cold at this time of year. The climate of the southern coast is hospitable from February to May, but quite cool and misty year-round, and particularly windy in August.

This self-drive Namibian adventure is perfect for those who are seeking an active vacation peppered with some stunning desert landscapes. Explore the vast wilderness with its beautifully barren panoramas as you hike, quad bike, kayak and drive your way across Namibia.

  1. Fly to Windhoek (via Johannesburg)

  2. Days 1-2: Windhoek

Your exciting and active journey across Namibia starts in Windhoek. You will spend one night in rest and relaxation in a guesthouse where your hire car will be delivered to.

    Accommodation: Galton House (1 night)

  3. Days 2-4: Sossusvlei

Starting your road trip, this morning you will head towards Sesriem, the gateway to the rolling red sand dunes of Sosssusvlei located in the arid Namib Desert. Situated around 30km south-east of Sesriem in a private nature reserve is Desert Homestead Lodge. During your stay at Desert Homestead you will spend one morning heading into the Namib-Naukluft Park National Park to climb some of the tallest sand dunes in the world and to visit the petrified trees of Dead Vlei, then in the afternoon visit the Sesriem Canyon for a hike and more stunning views.

    Accommodation: Desert Homestead (2 nights)

  4. Days 4-5: Sossusvlei

Today you will rise early, and after a light breakfast will set off on a hike to your next lodge. For the first leg you will follow a canyon to the local landmark mountain. After around an hour and a half you should reach the saddle just as the sun rises, here you can take a quick break and enjoy the first light of the day as it reaches the red Namib dunes. Setting off again you will follow a tributary of the Tsauchab River for around 2 hours until you reach the bottom of the next mountain. Remaining at an elevation, you can still enjoy stunning views before your descent towards Desert Homestead Outpost where you will stay for one night. Spend the rest of the afternoon at your leisure, or head out to further explore the area.

Accommodation: Desert Homestead Outpost (1 night)

  5. Days 5-7: Swakopmund

Today you continue your active adventure of Namibia as you drive to the coastal town of Swakopmund where you will stay in a guesthouse for the next two nights. Swakopmund is a thrill seekers paradise and you’ll be spoiled for choice with the range of activities on offer. During your stay we have arranged a guided kayaking tour with the seals at Pelican Point, this peaceful marine haven is also home to some spectacular birdlife. Another excellent experience we have planned is a three-hour quad bike tour. This thrilling ride takes you over Namibia’s seemingly endless sand dunes as you head through the Swakopmund River mouth. Take a moment to stop for a quick drink and to enjoy some incredible views. This three-hour tour also includes an hour of sandboarding down these magnificent dunes.

    Accommodation: Swakopmund Guesthouse (2 nights)

  6. Days 7-10: Damaraland

Traveling north from Swakopmund you will head to the Palmwag region for three nights. For the first night you will stay at Etendeka Mountain Camp, this camp and location offers a unique and pristine wilderness stay. For two nights of the stay you will be taking the overnight walking trail which is set in the foothills of the Grootberg Massif, this authentic experience takes you through one of Namibia’s most remote and untouched landscapes on foot where you will have sundowners overlooking some stunning vistas and will sleep under a blanket of stars. Your passionate guide will be on hand throughout to offer anecdotes and information about the area and the animals that live there. Both nights of the trail will be spent in two separate camps, although simple, these camps offer comfort and spectacular locations. Hearty meals are cooked over an open fire, to offer a back to basics experience.

Accommodation: Etendeka Mountain Camp (3 nights)

  7. Days 10-12: Ongava Private Game Reserve

Next, your journey continues as you drive to the Ongava Concession located on the south-west corner of Etosha National Park where you will stay at Ongava Lodge for the next two nights. Situated on a 35,000-hectare private game reserve Ongava offers a range of exciting safari activities to find some of the game that lives there. Large plains game congregates around the waterholes, as well as animals such as elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest. A large waterhole in front of the lodge also offers some great game viewing from the comfort of the decking.

Accommodation: Ongava Tented Camp (2 nights)

  8. Days 12-13: Central Highlands

For your last full day in Namibia you will drive into Etosha National Park for some more game viewing. Stop off at various waterholes along the way to watch as animals approach for a drink. The gates to Etosha open at sunrise and close at sunset, so we recommend you head out as early as possible to see as much as you can. After Etosha National Park you will head south to Okonjima. This is the home of the AfriCat Foundation which works hard for the conservation of big cats in the area. Spend your final afternoon on a leopard viewing activity to see these beautiful animals like never before.

Accommodation: Okonjima Plains Camp (1 night)

  9. Fly home from Windhoek (via Johannesburg)

  • Game drive in Etosha National Park

Venture into the Etosha National Park on game drives. The vast Park covers 22,270 km² and is home to a wide range of birds, mammals and reptiles. Due to the arid nature of the park the game congregates round the waterholes to drink.
