Like the rest of Malaysia, Sabah’s climate is hot and humid. Expect temperatures in the high 20s and low 30s throughout the lowlands. The state’s rainfall averages about 300cm annually and though it rains throughout the year, the heaviest rainfall generally occurs between October and January.

This exciting itinerary incorporates plenty of adventure, but at a fairly gentle pace, allowing you to make the most of the experience. Venture into Borneo's rainforests in search of the incredible wildlife, and finish at an idyllic island retreat.

  1. Days 1-2: Kuala Lumpur

    Start your trip with a night in Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur. Relax after your flight or if you are feeling energetic, why not visit some of the city's cultural sites such as the Petronas Towers, or sample some of the delicious street food at one of the markets.

    Accommodation: Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur (1 night)

  2. Days 2-3: Sandakan and Sepilok

    From Kuala Lumpur you will fly to Sandakan, which is within Borneo's Sabah district. Spend a in the heart of Sepilok - home to the renowned Orangutan  Rehabilitation Center and Sunbear Sanctuary. Here orphaned, abandoned or injured animals are resuced and rehabilitated within the relative wild and offers a great example of Borneo's conservation efforts. Try to visit the center at feeding time to try and catch site of the orangutans swinging through the trees as they descend to the feeding platform.

    Accommodation: Sepilok Nature Resort (1 night)

  3. Days 3-6: Kinabatangan River

    From here you will venture further inland to the Kinabatangan River, known to have one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Borneo. Spend your time here exploring the area by boat along the rivers many tributaries or explore on foot with trusty guides looking out for local inhabitants such as pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys, hornbills and even bearded pigs. Included in this itinerary is a guided river wildlife spotting boat cruise on Oxbow Lake.

    Accommodation: Sukau Rainforest Lodge (3 nights)

  4. Days 6-8: Danum Valley and Tabin

    Next continue overland to Danum Valley, an area of pristine primary rainforest. Here you can enjoy some fantastic treks into the rainforest learning about the local flora and fauna, cameras always at the ready. After the sun sets on this breath-taking landscape you can still enjoy guided night walks and jeep safaris, meaning you have plenty of opportunities to spot the local wildlife at all  times of the day and night. We have included both a guided rainforest trek and a river-tubing adventure during your stay in the Danum Valley.

    Accommodation: Borneo Rainforest Lodge (2 nights)

  5. Days 8-13: Islands and Beaches

    The last few days of your trip will see you transferred to Lahad Datu, before flying Kota Kinabalu. From here you will be whisked away to the delightful Gaya Island. Unwind in the idyllic island setting enjoying the relative peace and exploring the underwater world and reefs surrounding the islands. Opt to join a diving excursion or if you prefer to be land based enjoy a rainforest trek high up into the jungle canopy where you can opt to zipline through the trees - the ultimate adventure. Gaya Island offers you  complete flexibility and your stay on the island can be as relaxed or as active as you would like.

  • Borneo Rainforest Lodge - Canopy Walk

    An adventure along Borneo Rainforest Lodge's canopy walk is often one of the highlights of a stay here. This suspended walkway is 300 meters long, and reaches 26 meters high at its peak, offering a different perspective into the rainforest.

  • Borneo Rainforest Lodge - Night Safari

    Hop into the back of an open-air truck for a night safari; a great time to see nocturnal primates such as the slow loris, flying red squirrel, samba deer, and civets. Your guide will use a strong torch to search for wildlife as you bump along the track.

  • Borneo Rainforest Lodge - Rainforest Trek

    Accompanied by your expert guide, trek through the pristine primary rainforest of the Danum Valley. This is one of the oldest rainforests in the world, filled with wonderful wildlife, astonishing plants, tumbling waterfalls and mysterious rock pools.

  • Borneo Rainforest Lodge - “Coffin Cliff” Trek

    Trek up to the “Coffin Cliff”, an ancient burial site of the Kadazandusun tribe, passing through picturesque rainforest and past waterfalls. You will also take in the best views of Danum Valley, and enjoy a refreshing dip in a natural Jacuzzi pool.

  • Sepilok Orangutan and Sun Bear Sanctuary

    Visit the famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center. Here you will have a chance to see successfully rehabilitated orangutans coming to feeding platforms, and perhaps even juvenile orangutans during one of their daily training sessions.

  • Sukau Rainforest Lodge - Hornbill Boardwalk

    Accompanied by the lodge's in-house naturalist, take a stroll along the Hornbill Boardwalk, keeping a eye out for the wildlife that can often been seen around the property.

  • Sukau Rainforest Lodge - Kelenanap Oxbow Lake

    Start early this morning and take a boat cruise up the Kinabatangan River to the Kelenanap Oxbow Lake. The early morning is a great time to spot wildlife, and experience the rainforest coming alive as the sun rises.

  • Sukau Rainforest Lodge - River Cruise

    Take a cruise along the Kinabatangan River, keeping an eye out for the local wildlife, which can include crocodiles, proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, hornbills and sometimes even the elusive orangutan.
