Best time to Visit
Good time to visit
Average time to visit
Malawi has a moderate to sub-tropical climate with three distinct seasons: from November to March is the rainy season, April to July is Malawi's winter, when the weather is cool and dry, and August to October is summer, when the weather is hot and dry. In terms of game-viewing, the dryer months, meaning a higher concentration of game at the permanent water sources, are a superb time to visit. Alternatively come for some superb bird-watching at the end of the rains.

Days 1-4: Majete Wildlife Reserve
Start your Malawi adventure as you take a fascinating and scenic flight to the Majete Wildlife Reserve where you will spend your first three nights at Mkulumadzi Lodge. During your time at the lodge you will be taken out on day and night game drives, as well as wonderfully exhilarating bush walks, all led by a very experienced guide. These walks are not route marches; rather they are a gentle stroll through swathes of riverine forest and open grassy plains, with your guide showing you the sights and sounds of the bush. Walking along the river, you may be lucky enough to see elephant come down to drink, or even spot plains game such as eland and sable, both of which can be found in the park. Birding trips on the Shire River are a highlight, or visit the nearby Elephant Marsh, which really lives up to its name. In the evening, return to the lodge which is lit beautifully with spirit lanterns; meals are a friendly affair, using fresh ingredients in deliciously creative ways.

Days 4-8: Lake Malawi
After a wonderful exploration of Malawi’s newest game park, you will transfer across to the jewel in Malawi’s crown – the sparklingly clear Lake Malawi. A transfer takes you through bustling market villages and on towards the lake shore, where you will find the Nankumba Peninsula of Lake Malawi, which borders Lake Malawi National Park. Here lies Pumulani, bordered on all sides by the National Park, and with just ten luxurious villas dotted about a hillside, overlooking the azure blue waters of the lake. The villas are all individually designed and are incredibly spacious and airy; each has a large wooden deck with beautiful views and a very comfortable living area. Spend your days at Pumulani on the clear waters of Lake Malawi where activities like snorkeling, fishing, sailing, nature walks, and mountain bike hire are included. For an extra cost, why not try out diving and water skiing. In the evening, board the lodge’s very own dhow and relax as the sun goes down with a sunset cruise. After exploring two of Malawi’s top highlights, enjoy a gentle transfer back to the airport before boarding for your flight home.
