Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Zambia and Malawi have a moderate to sub-tropical climate with three distinct seasons. This itinerary is designed to fall within one of Zambia's most beautiful seasons - the lush, green and warm time at the end of the rains, before the bush starts to dry up. The weather will be warm and balmy with clear skies and sunshine, and cooler evenings and mornings. A perfect time for lovely game viewing and relaxing on the beach in the heat of the day.

Itinerary

This wonderful combination of Zambia and Malawi takes you on a safari adventure to explore the game-packed South Luangwa National Park with an expert guide to the clear waters of Lake Malawi where the remainder of your vacation will be spent relaxing on the shores, or swimming in the lake.

  1. Fly to Lusaka

  2. Days 1-5: South Luangwa National Park

Your adventure starts with an overnight flight to Zambia, from where you will be transferred to the South Luangwa National Park. Zambia's gem, this park is packed with wildlife and ripe to be explored. In the company of your expert guide you will discover the furthest reaches of the park, spotting elephant, hippo, leopard and lion on the way. There's also the chance to see good numbers of wild dog, which flourish in the early part of the season, and can often be found hunting or resting in the shade. Days will be spent on morning and afternoon game drives, with the opportunity to head out on foot as well. During the emerald season, there will also be the opportunity to explore the lagoons and Luangwa River by boat – offering the perfect opportunity to spot birds. In the evenings, the night drives reveal the nocturnal predators of the bush - seek out leopard and lion, and the smaller animals such as genet and civet, before returning to the lodge for a delicious supper and drinks around the camp fire.

Accommodation: Luangwa River Camp (4 nights)

  3. Days 5-8: Lake Malawi

After your exploration, cross the border in a light aircraft and head for the lake. One of Africa's largest freshwater lakes, Lake Malawi is crystal clear and sparkling, and teeming with myriad cichild fish. Staying on the lake or shores of the lake offers beautiful views from the comfort of your room. Spend your days relaxing, snorkeling and diving. We also recommend you take a trip in the lodge's own Malawian dhow as the sun sets, offering the perfect end to any day.

    Accommodation: Pumulani (3 nights)

  4. Fly home from Lake Malawi

Experiences

  • Game Drives in the South Luangwa

Game drives are the most common way of exploring the African bush. A vehicle allows you to cover distance quickly and comfortably and offers visitors the best opportunity of getting very close to wildlife in a safe and controlled way.

  • Kite Surfing on Lake Malawi

Lake Malawi lends itself beautifully to all manner of watersports; from diving and snorkeling to the more sedate boat trips at sunset, or kayaking the many rocky coves and inlets fringing its waters.

  • Night Drives

If you get the opportunity to head out after sunset you should take it. The bush transforms under the cover of darkness as the nocturnal wildlife gets going. Using a spotlight your guide will scan the bush for eye-shine picking out some great action.
