Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The main time to visit the Liuwa Plain is between August and December, the drier months of the year, where access is possible. As the dry season wears on, game-viewing becomes even more rewarding as the grass is trampled and grazed lower, and wildlife concentrates around water sources. In November, the rains begin, short and sharp, with dramatic cloud formations and storms in the late afternoon. Around this time of year, the pans burst into life with flowers carpeting the ground. It's also an exciting time of year wildlife-wise, as herds of blue wildebeest move in on their annual migration from Angola. From December to April, the plains are in flood, causing problems for access for visitors, but providing life to the wildlife that remains here year-round.

Itinerary

Visit the lesser known and lesser visited, but no less impressive Liuwa Plain and Kafue National Park to experience an almost exclusive game experience in some beautiful wilderness settings. Located in western Zambia, both of these parks are characterized by wide open plains, perfect for photo opportunities and to spot some of the game that lives there. This itinerary is ideal for those returning to Zambia and want to explore somewhere completely new.

  1. Fly to Lusaka

Your vacation begins as you fly into Lusaka to catch your light aircraft flight to Kabalo Airstrip in Liuwa National Park.

  2. Days 1-2: Victoria Falls - the Zambia side

Your vacation begins as you arrive into Livingstone Airport in Zambia. Here you will have one night at Victoria Falls where you could spend the afternoon exploring the Falls or heading out on another afternoon activity like kayaking, a sunset river cruise, or even a microlight flight. Otherwise you could relax after a long journey before you safari in western Zambia commences.

Accommodation: The Royal Livingstone Resort (1 night)

  3. Days 2-6: Liuwa Plain National Park

Today your morning begins with a road transfer to Livingstone Airport where you will catch a flight to the Kalabo Airstrip in Kafue. On arrival into Kalabo Airstrip your pilot will meet you and brief you before you take the 15-minute scenic helicopter transfer into King Lewanika Lodge in Liuwa Plain National Park where you will be spending the next three nights.

This stunning lodge is the only permanent lodge in the whole of the Liuwa Plain National Park, so your stay here is one of complete exclusivity and intimacy. Your next three days will be spent on day and night game drives and heading out on walking and canoeing safaris. Liuwa Plain is home to Africa's second largest wildebeest migration, stunning birdlife and a growing cheetah population, as well as the famous Lady Liuwa lion pride.

    Accommodation: King Lewanika (4 nights)

  4. Days 6-10: Kafue and western Zambia

This morning your trip continues as you take the short helicopter trip back to Kalabo Airstrip where you will catch your flight to Kafue National Park.

On arrival into Kafue, you will be transferred to the Busanga Plains where you will spend the next four nights at Shumba Camp. This elegant camp is found on a tee island in the center of the plains with floodplain views seemingly going on forever. During a stay here everything is included, from food and drink to activities. For the next four days we recommend making the most out of the game activities in the area - go on exciting game drives, scenic boat trips, and atmospheric night drives. One thing that should not be missed is getting up early to take a hot air balloon over the Busanga Plains - a truly breathtaking experience.

    Accommodation: Shumba Camp (4 nights)

  5. Fly home from Lusaka

Today your vacation ends as you take a light aircraft flight from Kafue National Park back to Lusaka where you will begin your journey home.
