Any time of year is fine for a visit except from January to March, when heavy rainfall in many areas can make some roads all but impassable, and when there’s a high risk of cyclones in the east and northeast. In general, the best time to travel in most areas is April and October/November. The coolest time to travel anywhere is during the dry season (May to October). Whale watching off Ile Sainte Marie is best from mid July to mid September.
Average maximum temperatures vary from about 30°C in coastal areas (higher in summer) to around 25°C on the hauts plateaux. In Antananarivo and other highland areas, temperatures during winter can drop to 10°C and even lower during the night.
This itinerary is perfect for the adventurer looking to get off the beaten track and into the heart of Madagascar. Steeped in rich wildlife and dramatic scenery, this itinerary is a great option for anyone prepared to travel a bit further and discover some of the country's finest beauty, combining incredible wildlife, dramatic rock formations, beautiful landscapes, humpback whales all before ending with a secluded island escape.
Arrive into the bustling capital city of Antananarivo. Here you will be met by a representative and transferred to your charming guest house, where you can relax and refresh after your long haul flight. Depending on your time of arrival, a historic city tour can be arranged.
Your wildlife adventure begins with two nights in Andasibe reserve, an ideal introduction to Madagascar's wildlife and an opportunity to get close up sightings of the Indri, the largest of the lemur species- and certainly the loudest! Spend your time exploring the reserve on foot in search of these teddy bear like creatures with your expert guide. In the evening, after a delicious dinner, you will head out on a night walk in search of Madagascar’s more elusive nocturnal species such as the tiny mouse lemur.
From Andasibe return by road to Tana and board your private charter flight to Tsingy de Bemaraha located in the far west of Madagascar where you will spend the next three nights. This is an incredible region dominated by its razor sharp limestone pinnacles. This unique site is classified as an UNESCO world Heritage site and is the result of erosion of limestone over millions of years ago and is home to a plethora of wildlife with over 11 different species of lemur, 103 species of bird life, 22 species of amphibians and a variety of reptiles. There are two areas of the reserve to explore, the Petit Tsingy and the Grand Tsingy. The Petit Tsingy is the less extreme of the two but there are a choice of trails to take depending on fitness levels. The Grand Tsingy requires a head for heights as you tip toe across the sharp pinnacles crossing a high roped bridge passing over the fragile rock formations.
After breakfast, transfer to Morondava by road with a stop at “Allée des baobabs” to enjoy the gorgeous sunset among the largest species of baobab, which are astounding in size. Morondava is situated in the heart of Sakalava territory and is known for its elaborately sculpted wooden royal tombs, the drive itself will be a fascinating insight into Malagasy culture.
Today you will return to Antananarivo on a scheduled Air Madagascar flight. This capital city is the best way to connect to multiple points of this huge island and you can of course vary your Antananarivo accommodation throughout the itinerary or return to the same guesthouse, where it can be nice to see some familiar faces.
After breakfast, your guide will take you back to the airport for your Air Madagascar flight to Sainte Marie. Ile Sainte Marie is known for its whale watching opportunities which are best between July to October when Humpback whales move through the channels to breed and give birth to their young. The island is fringed with overhanging coconut palms and shores protected by coral reefs. In addition to whale watching, exploring the island is a must either by bike or quad bike visiting local fishing villages and mangroves channels or take to the water and enjoy deep sea fishing or join snorkeling excursions to the reef.
Leaving Ile Sainte Marie, you will return to Antananarivo. Again you can either stay in the same “home away from home” accommodation or we can arrange an alternative.
Today you will fly north to Nosy Be and take a short boat transfer across to the remote island of Nosy Komba, one of the most picturesque islands in the Nosy Be archipelago. Experience the gentle caress of the wind, the bird songs and the sound of the waves lapping around this former volcano, bordered by a sapphire blue sea with golden sandy beaches. The preservation of this sublime environment, and the community-minded activities being pursued here, are just two of the ethical aspects of this marvelous eco-paradise.
Today you will fly back to the capital, Antananarivo for your final night. Depending on your dates, an international flight from Nosy Be can be a great option to avoid a final night in the capital.
Explore the waters around Tsarabanjina where there is rewarding snorkeling on offer with colorful fish, rays and turtles roaming free whether you choose to take the plunge directly from the beach or on a boat trip - an underwater camera is a must.
