Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The best time to visit Oman is between November and mid-March, when the cooler air brings the mountain scenery sharply into focus and daytime temperatures average 25°C. For the rest of the year, much of Oman is oppressively hot and hazy, particularly between May and August. The Dhofar region, and Salalah, experiences the Khareef (or monsoon) during the summer months, between mid-June and mid-September, making the mountains really lush during this time and for some weeks afterwards. Salalah is much cooler than the north, reaching a maximum of 32°C during the summer.

Itinerary

This itinerary takes you on an adventure and off the beaten track, in luxury. There is so much to see and do in both Northern and Southern Oman and this will introduce you to the highlights of Muscat, the Empty Quarter, the mountains and Salalah.

  1. Days 1-3: Nizwa

Your adventure begins by arriving into the beautiful city of Muscat where you will be met by your private driver in a 4x4 and whisked away to Oman’s fantastic mountain range. The Jabal Al Akhdar area is characterized by soaring peaks, rugged canyons, terraced fruit orchards and rose gardens fed by fresh water springs. Tonight will be spent 2000m above sea level with astonishing views across the dramatic scenery. The mountains are fantastic for trekking, biking, rock climbing and of course, relaxing, and we have included for you a day tour around Nizwa, Jabrin Castle and Bahla Fort. Nizwa was the capital of Oman in the 6th and 7th centuries and has much to offer with historical buildings, an imposing fort and a bustling souk with a fantastic animal market on Fridays.

Accommodation: Alila Jabal Akhdar (2 nights)

  2. Days 3-5: Muscat

After two nights in the mountains, head back towards the coast for two nights in Muscat, soaking up the vibrant atmosphere of Oman’s capital city. Your guide will be able to show you around the famous Sultan Qaboos Mosque, stop for a photo at the Sultan’s Palace, and steer you through the crowds to discover the truly authentic flavor of the Souq. Enjoy this lively city for two nights before it’s time to head on.

Accommodation: The Chedi Muscat (2 nights)

  3. Days 5-7: Salalah and the Empty Quarter

In the morning you will embark on a short 90 minute flight to Salalah, in the south west of Oman. The Dhofar region is a complete contrast to the north- with coconut trees, banana plants and even Frankincense trees, it certainly feels a lot more tropical. Head well off the beaten track with a four-hour drive through the desert into the Empty Quarter of Oman, with nothing for miles but endlessly rolling sand dunes. We typically recommend two nights camping here as this allows guests the chance to break away from civilization to meet the Bedouins and experience the peacefulness of a truly off-grid lifestyle. Sit on a private sand dune watching the sand change color in the light of the setting sun is bound to be an unforgettable experience and surrounded by lanterns and candles you can lay back and count constellations in the clear night sky. This is easily one of the most remote camping locations we offer at Scott Dunn.

Accommodation: Hud Hud Bespoke Luxury Camping; Empty Quarter & Salalah (2 nights)

  4. Days 7-10: Salalah and the Empty Quarter

After two memorable nights in the desert, re-join the real world in the seaside town of Salalah. For those wishing for more, we have included a half day city tour of the city, including unmissable sights such as the local cattle market and the fascinating Museum of Frankincense Land. If you wish to just kick back and relax, you have a blissful three-night stay on the white sandy beaches overlooking the Arabian Sea in which to swim, sunbathe or indulge in spoiling spa treatments before it’s eventually time to head home.

Accommodation: Anantara Al Baleed Resort Salalah (3 nights)
