Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

In general the best time to visit Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam as a whole is between October and March whilst in Bangkok, November to April are the best with the least rain. However there are regional variations and you can visit year round. April and May can get quite humid before the monsoons arrive. During the wetter season of July and August, rainfall tends to be short and sharp and the remainder of the day usually remains quite sunny. Vietnam's coastline is at its best between January and September.

Towering skyscrapers, winding rivers and intriguing temples combine on this non-stop itinerary through the dramatic and changing scenery of Indochina, taking in five exciting countries in three weeks. Experienced guides and one-of-a-kind experiences make this enchanting tour a firm Scott Dunn favorite.

  1. Days 1-3: Hong Kong

Begin your journey in Hong Kong, Asia's gastronomic hub and a shopper's paradise. Offering a fusion of East meets West, it provides a perfect first taste of Indochina as well as having a major airport, easily accessible from around the world. Our expert guides will whisk you away on a full day trip around Hong Kong that will take in must-see sights from the traditional markets, fishing harbors and of course a trip up Victoria Peak, boasting out-of-this-world views over the humming, neon lights of the city below.

Accommodation: Peninsula Hong Kong (2 nights)

  2. Days 3-4: Saigon

After two nights in the vibrant hub of Hong Kong, you will fly across into Vietnam. One night in Ho Chi Minh City, or Saigon as it was formerly known, will spin you into exhaustion but this metropolis never fails to charm with its age-old traditions. Do not miss out on a fascinating tour of city’s highlights, including a trip to the Notre Dame Cathedral as your guide steers you through the hustle and bustle of this electric city that never sleeps.

Accommodation: Park Hyatt Saigon (1 night)

  3. Days 4-8: Mekong Delta

From Saigon you will then cruise to Phnom Penh in Cambodia. It will take four blissful nights for this unforgettable trip winding down the Mekong river past verdant fields and local farms. The floating hotel boat organizes off-shore, off-the-beaten-track excursions which include cycling tours, visiting remote villages through glistening rice paddies.

Accommodation: Pandaw Cruises; Mekong River (4 nights)

  4. Days 8-9: Phnom Penh

Back on land, you will arrive into Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia once the 'Pearl of Asia’. Here we have included one of our favorite experiences, an exciting cyclo tour around the old and new districts of the city where you can examine early Chinese shop-houses, French colonial buildings and the eclectic new style that is emerging from the charming chaos.

Accommodation: Rosewood Phnom Penh (1 night)

  5. Days 9-12: Siem Reap & Angkor Wat

The next stop will be via a short flight to Siem Reap in the north of Cambodia. This colorful town is the gateway to the world-famous Angkor Archaeological Site, home to the iconic Angkor Wat. Although a prime spot for tourists, your guide will ensure you get an uninterrupted view of Angkor Wat at sunrise, a magical experience worth getting out of bed for. Your guide will also be able to steer you away from the crowds to lose yourselves among the silent ruins of lesser known temples, almost entirely consumed by the trees, and knows the best times to visit more popular locations when they will be less busy. We have also included for you a trip onto Tonle Sap, Southeast Asia’s largest lake where you can visit a traditional floating village and enjoy a quiet lunch amongst the unique flooded landscape.

Accommodation: Belmond La Résidence d’Angkor (3 nights)

  6. Days 12-13: Hanoi

Head back to Vietnam for the first of your two nights in the capital city of Hanoi. We suggest you take some time to slow down with a trip to see a traditional water puppet show, a popular Vietnamese pastime.

Accommodation: Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi (1 night)

  7. Days 13-14: Halong Bay

After a night in the town, you will take a four-hour drive, or exhilarating 45-minute sea plane to the UNESCO protected and iconic Halong Bay. Spend the night on the water between the towering limestone karsts, and by day explore floating villages, fishing communities and mysterious caves by kayak.

Accommodation: Heritage Line - Violet (1 night)

  8. Days 14-15: Hanoi

Waking up on board after a night on the bay, you then head back to Hanoi for your final night in Vietnam, where we suggest you embark on an authentic food tour with your guide around the Old Quarter, the perfect place to finish off your last evening.

Accommodation: Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi (1 night)

  9. Days 15-18: Luang Prabang

Take a short flight across to Luang Prabang, the sleepy and cultural mountain town in the heart of Laos. Full of glistening temples and misty views, simply spend time here wandering or cycling through the tiny winding streets, enjoying its cafes and discovering some of the finest temples in Asia. We have included a full day tour of the town to familiarise you with the major sites such as the Royal Palace and the 16th century Wat Xiengthong. Learn about the fascinating diversity of Laotian culture in the tiny Traditional Arts and Ethnology Center before perhaps rounding off your tour with a climb to watch the sun set from Mount Phousi. We have also included a trip to the mighty Kuang Si Waterfalls where you can swim in the cool water, colored an impossible shade of blue from the mineral content of the rocks, and a longtail boat trip on the Mekong to the mysterious Buddha caves of Pak Ou.

    Accommodation: Satri House (3 nights)

  10. Days 18-20: Chiang Mai

Nearing the end of your trip, you fly across the mountains to your final country, Thailand. We think a two night stop in Chiang Mai is the perfect amount of time to soak up the culture and history of Thailand’s third largest city. We have included a city tour of Chiang Mai’s best known and most impressive temples as well as the chance to explore some of the surrounding countryside and its local villages by bicycle.

Accommodation: Anantara Chiang Mai Resort (2 nights)

  11. Days 20-22: Bangkok

Round off the journey of a lifetime with two final nights in bustling Bangkok. Full of aromatic local markets, the latticework of canals (where it got its nickname The Venice of the East) and fantastic shopping and dining it is the perfect end to your trip. Spend a full day exploring some of the highlights and hidden gems of Bangkok, from witnessing the morning chanting of monks at Wat Pho, to embarking on a longtail boat to explore the floating markets and gain some insight into the history and heritage of this iconic capital.

    Accommodation: Peninsula Bangkok (2 nights)
