Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Cambodia and Laos are hot all year round and the best time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. It starts to get wetter in May and the wettest months are September and October. It is still possible to visit during this time as rain usually falls as short sharp storms. November is a fantastic month to visit Laos and Cambodia as it is very green after the rainy season and the lakes and rivers are full of water. Vietnam has three different weather systems; generally the South follows Cambodia and Laos' weather pattern with their dry season ending a little earlier in March. The central coast is at its best from April to September with July and August when it is at its hottest. North Vietnam is dry and warm from March to June and October to November, although May and June can get very humid and hot. July to September is very wet, and December to February is cool and drizzly.

Embark on an oriental adventure to discover the hotspots of sleepy Laos, explore the rich culture of Cambodia and enjoy the contrast of Vietnam’s bustling cities and tranquil coastline. Stay in our favorite properties as you spend an exciting two weeks taking in the sights and sounds of Indochina.

  1. Days 1-4: Luang Prabang

Your journey starts in the idyllic mountain town of Luang Prabang, home to quaint cobbled streets and gleaming temples with traditional low sweeping roofs. Explore the Royal Palace, peep into mysterious temples and wander around the fascinating Ethnology Museum alongside your expert guide, as they explain a little about Laos’ varied history and unique culture. Finish the day with a climb to the top of Mount Phousi to watch the sun set, or perhaps sit in a tranquil temple courtyard to listen to the evening chanting of the monks. We have also included a day trip to Kuang Si waterfall, a raging torrent of impossibly blue water, thundering down from the densely jungled cliffs high above your head. Here you can enjoy a dip in one of the calm lower pools and stop in at the sun bear sanctuary to see some native bears that have been rescued from the pet trade or have been injured and can never return to the wild.

    Accommodation: Satri House (3 nights)

  2. Days 4-8: Siem Reap & Angkor Wat

A short flight takes you to Siem Reap, the cultural heartland of Cambodia just a short distance from the famous abandoned temple complex of Angkor. Here you will be able to spend four blissful nights exploring the tranquil ruins by day and the lively town by night, and truly getting to grips with Cambodian philosophy and traditions. Our expert guides specialize in steering you away from the crowds, taking you to lesser-known temples deep in the forest and avoiding the peak times at the more well-known ones in the half day of touring we have included. And of course, no trip to Angkor is complete without a visit to the iconic Angkor Wat at dawn to watch the sun rise over this majestic ruin’s reflecting pools. We also suggest taking a tour of Tonle Sap, Southeast Asia’s largest lake, on a private boat. When the water levels are high you will be able to venture right into the center to experience silence and tranquillity far away from any other people. In the dry season the lake is too shallow to negotiate to the center, so we also offer a tour of the margins in a speedboat originally used by rangers to catch poachers. On both trips you will be able to visit a traditional floating village and enjoy a delicious meal on the lake as you try to spot the local birds and wildlife.

    Accommodation: Phum Baitang (4 nights)

  3. Days 8-10: Hanoi

It’s time to say goodbye to Cambodia and head over the border to Hanoi, Vietnam’s quaint capital city. You can stay right in the heart of the town, just steps from the intriguing Old Quarter with all its winding lanes and tiny shops. Your guide will be able to explain a little about the history of this unique city as they steer you through the hustle and bustle to visit the main landmarks, and of course you must finish off the day with a traditional egg coffee in one of the local coffee shops.

Accommodation: Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi (2 nights)

  4. Days 10-11: Halong Bay

An early start for the four-hour drive, or optionally an exciting 45-minute sea plane flight down to Vietnam’s most iconic location, Halong Bay. Boarding one of the cruise ships, you will be whisked away for a night amongst the towering limestone karsts and the options of kayaking, swimming, snorkeling and exploring the many caves and grottos in the area.

Accommodation: Heritage Line - Violet (1 night)

  5. Days 11-14: Hoi An

Return to Hanoi Airport for a short flight down to Da Nang on the central coast. From here it is just a short drive to the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Town of Hoi An, home to twisting streets decorated with colorful paper lanterns and the famous tailor shops. China Beach nearby is dotted with luxurious resorts, perfect for a couple of days downtime to unwind, while also being able to venture out in the evenings for a meal in one of the inviting restaurants. We have included a morning walking tour which will uncover the history of the jumble of Japanese, Chinese and Vietnamese buildings, and show you around the bustling food market where you can also buy genuine silk which can be tailored into a beautiful garment in just a day or two.

Accommodation: Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai Hoi An (3 nights)

  6. Days 14-16: Saigon

Finally, it is time to fly to Ho Chi Minh City, also known as Saigon. This city is a total contrast to the old-fashioned streets of Hanoi, and is a dynamic metropolis filled with museums, shops, restaurants and arguably some of the best rooftop bars in the country. Enjoy your final city tour to historical landmarks such as the Notre Dame Cathedral, and the Central Post Office which was designed by French Architect Gustav Eiffel. Don’t forget to take a wander down Nguyen Hue Walking Street for some last-minute shopping before it’s time to head home.
