Best time to Visit

Average time to visit

It is very difficult to predict the weather in the United Kingdom - in the summer from May to late September is generally seen as the most pleasant time to visit. Rainfall is difficult to predict - but the UK does not receive as much as many are led to believe! In the winters, temperatures do fall, but there is nothing better than finding a remote pub with a roaring fire to sit beside after a long walk in the country.

Description

Reading like a Who’s Who of British history, The Lygon Arms has played host to Charles I and Oliver Cromwell as well as Prince Philip, and its winding staircases, wooden beams and leaded windows offer a cosy base from which to explore the Cotswolds.

With cosy lounges, a range of dining options and supremely comfortable rooms and suites spread across the centuries-old building and the newer annexes, The Lygon Arms has been welcoming guests since the 14th century. Perfectly located to explore the beautiful town of Broadway, and further afield, this delightful Cotswold bolthole oozes historic charm and character in every nook, cranny and snug corner.

From the sumptuously comfortable mattresses, handmade in Devon, to Nespresso machines, Gordon Russell antiques and tartan furnishings, the 86 rooms and suites are quaint, comfortable and retain the old-world charm of the building. Sleep in a room once visited by royalty and soak in the history that seeps out of every beam, dappled glass window and creaking floorboard.

The seasonal British menu crafts local ingredients into classic dishes, in the grand surrounds of the 16th century hall. The Lygon Bar and Grill is a relaxed and informal dining space, despite its elegant leather banquettes and marble tables. The cosy Lygon Wine Bar offers lighter Italian-inspired dishes accompanied by a range of European wines, while a quintessentially English afternoon tea is served in the Terrace restaurant or in the courtyard. Inviting lounges with leather armchairs, Persian rugs and wooden rocking chairs by roaring fires offer a warm retreat after a day exploring the Cotswold countryside, with delicious cocktails and bar meals.

An indoor pool with a retractable roof allows for a dip whatever the weather, with children’s swim times available for those traveling with younger guests. In the tranquil spa you’ll find a sauna, eucalyptus-scented steam room and Techno-gym fitness center along with a Spa Kitchen and Bar for lighter meals or a glass of champagne.

With historic Broadway on its doorstep, you could spend your time at The Lygon Arms exploring the antique shops, galleries and boutiques of this picture-perfect town, or travel further afield to explore Sudeley Castle, the Cotswold Wildlife Park, Blenheim Palace or the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Golf, clay-pigeon shooting, archery, horse riding and fishing can all be arranged to take you out into the beautiful Cotswold countryside.

Accommodation

The character-laden rooms and suites sympathetically retain the charm of the building with antique Gordon Russell furniture, tartan furnishings and individual touches that create the feel of a home-from-home. This historic appeal is balanced with modern touches that add an extra layer of comfort, with complimentary WIFI, tablets in each room, Nespresso coffee machines and Floris bath amenities. Six room categories range from Cosy Rooms to Master Suites, including the suite where King Charles slept in 1649.

Childcare

With child-friendly menus at the restaurants and a specially created children’s afternoon tea served during school vacations, younger guests are well looked after at The Lygon Arms. There are dedicated hours at the pool for children, a number of the rooms can accommodate extra beds and cots and babysitting can be requested in advance.

Facilities

A wealth of dining and drinking options are contained in the ancient surrounds of The Lygon Arms, from the classic British menu of The Lygon Bar and Grill to the delicate finger sandwiches and scones of Afternoon Tea on the Terrace. Cosy up in one of the Lounges with bar meals and a gin and tonic or enjoy Italian fare and an extensive wine list at The Lygon Wine Bar. An elegant swimming pool and luxury spa are tucked away in the private gardens, with a range of spa and beauty treatments, as well as a sauna, steam room and well-equipped fitness center.

Activities

You’d be forgiven for curling up in a cosy armchair with a good book and simply enjoying the atmospheric surrounds of the hotel, but the quaint streets of Broadway await, with its chocolate-box setting and postcard worthy scenes. The nearby Gordon Russell Museum is an interesting look into the iconic local furniture designer, while picturesque Cotswold villages and towns lie dotted throughout the rolling hills. The hotel holds a number of rubber wellington boots on hand that guests can borrow to set out and explore the rambling countryside, otherwise Shakespeares Stratford-upon-Avon is within easy reach.

When searching for a hotel that seamlessly weaves flawless service, authentic dcor and incredible cuisine into one destination, look no further than Lygon Arms. As you rock up to Lygon Arms you will notice your location is absolutely perfect, right off of the high street in Broadway! Plenty of kitschy stores, boutiques, cafs and restaurants surround you offering plenty of options to fill your days and evenings with.  The hotel has a very warm and comfortable feel with cosy fireplaces and an inviting bar. Make sure you visit the brasserie style restaurant, buzzing with people even on week nights. My number one pick is the cheese souffl to start, it's absolutely mouth-watering and to finish the classic sticky toffee pudding or one of the talented chefs rotating ice cream and sorbet collections. Once you have delighted your taste buds, steal away to the leisure center with a massive mosaic pool, a jacuzzi, sauna and a steam room. A small gym is available as well for those looking to stay in shape on vacation or take an opportunity to visit the High Street.  At night its tree lined streets are clad with fairy lighting.
