The Maha monsoon blows from October to January, bringing rain to the North and East, while the dry season is from May to September. The North and East are comparatively dry, with around 1000mm of rain annually. There is also an inter-monsoonal period in October and November when rain can occur in many parts of the island. Out-of-season travel has its advantages – not only do the crowds go away but many airfares and accommodation prices drop right down. Nor does it rain all the time during the low season.

Theva Residency is a contemporary boutique hotel just 10 minutes from Kandy Town, that allows guests to relax and revive themselves. Theva combines breathtaking views over Kandy and the mountains beyond, with modern design and a mouth-watering menu.

Perched on a hill above Kandy in the Hill Country, with just fifteen rooms and suites, this boutique hotel is a fabulous option for those with modern taste. Decorated with clean lines and a mixture of muted tones and bright colors, Theva offers a peaceful retreat above the hustle and bustle of Kandy. The decor draws on Kandy Perahera, the festival of the tooth, held in Kandy every year in July or August.

Theva's contemporary style extends to the food, with traditional Sri Lankan curries and fusion cuisine all being served with a twist. The restaurant itself has huge floor-to-ceiling windows in order to make the most of the views, and there is an outdoor area where guests can dine as well.

As a boutique hotel, and due to its location with plenty on offer surrounding it, Theva Residency has limited facilities. It plays home to an in-house sauna and an infinity pool.

Kandy itself offers visits to the beautiful Temple of the Tooth, supposed home to the Lord Buddha's left canine tooth; the Royal Botanical Garden which is renowned for its wide collection of orchids. As the capital of the Hill Country, it is the gateway to the tea plantations, and an excellent spot from which to learn all about Sri Lanka's biggest export - 'green gold', or Ceylon tea, drunk the world over.

Theva's 15 rooms are split into four types: Deluxe Rooms, Superior Rooms, Suites and the Penthouse. Deluxe Rooms are the least spacious, with Superior Rooms being slightly more spacious and with the added bonus of a balcony. The Suites have their own jacuzzi baths next to the panoramic windows, and the huge penthouse has a spacious sitting and dining room as well as a jacuzzi bath in the bathroom.

Only the Superior Rooms and the Penthouse are able to have extra beds for children.

While children are welcome at the hotel, there are no childcare facilities including no babysitting service. Superior Rooms and the Penthouse are the only rooms which are able to have an extra bed in.

Theva has one restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, where Asian-fusion food is on offer with an inventive twist, and can take the form of both Sri Lankan curries and international food from other regions around the world.

The hotel is equipped with an infinity pool and sauna. Outside the hotel, guests can visit Kandy, including the market, the Temple of the Tooth, the Botanical Gardens, and further afield, the tea plantations.

Theva is pretty contemporary with fantastic views and a really good place to base yourself for exploring Kandy. Don't miss the Sri Lankan curry here. It is much better for couples than it is for families as the rooms don't really lend themselves to multiple beds. For those who want to stay in the hotel, there is an infinity pool with a spectacular view and you can spend some time relaxing, but it is easy to get into Kandy itself for sightseeing.
