Rajasthan is known as the desert state. It is largely hot and dry throughout the year, making it a great destination to get away during cold winter months.
Summer in Rajasthan extends from April to June. It’s the hottest season so not ideal for travel, although early April is a good time to get great value for money if you don’t mind the heat. In western Rajasthan temperatures may soar, particularly in May and June, so we'd suggest avoiding Jaisalmer and the Thar Desert at this time.
The monsoon season usually runs from July to September. The temperature drops slightly, and humidity increases. During this period 90% of the rain Rajasthan occurs, although in reality Rajasthan never receives much rainfall. Lakes and rivers will be higher and there's more color to the landscape.
October to March is the best time to travel to Rajasthan. Expect warm and sunny weather, perfect for exploring and relaxing. Please note that hotels are at their busiest over the Christmas and New Year period. December and January can have very cool mornings and evening and we suggest taking some warm clothing. Whilst temperatures in the desert areas are always hot in the daytime, they become some of the coolest areas of the state once the sun goes down. It’s also normal to expect some fog in the major cities of northern Rajasthan in December and January.

Ratan Vilas is a restored heritage mansion located just outside the walls of central Jodhpur yet within easy reach of the sights. The property serves both as a family home as well as a guesthouse and offers a great value, peaceful stay in the blue city.
Ratan Vilas is a small friendly, family run hotel family run by a family of polo enthusiasts. The property definitely feels like a home with lots of family antiques and memorabilia but at the same time offers comfort with air-conditioned, en suite rooms each of which are individually decorated, spacious and feature antique furniture along with beautiful Indian fabrics.
The hotel has just twenty rooms in total of which the rooms overlooking the pool come highly recommended. As a small hotel the restaurant offers one main restaurant serving delicious Indian fare. Breakfasts are generally served outside in the mornings in the gardens and lunches and dinners tend to be buffet style Indian fare (with continental food available on request). The hotel also features a lovely pool area for relaxing by when you are not exploring the blue-city.
Ratan Vilas is a great property for those who appreciate true Rajput hospitality and the owning family (the grandson of the Maharaja who built it) are often on sight. For Scott Dunn it offers something a little more simple than other properties but plenty of character and great management make this property great value for money. Furthermore the location slightly out of town might be preferred by those looking for quieter surrounds than the walled-city and in this respect its location slightly outside of this is enticing, perfect for exploring all Jodhpur has to offer.
There are just twenty rooms at Ratan Vilas, giving the property a friendly, homely feel. Situated around a courtyard, each has air conditioning and plenty of space to unwind.
Children are welcome at Ratan Vilas, but please be aware there are no specific facilities for them.
Ratan Vilas provides a great base for exploring Jodhpur. Visit Mehrangarh Fort which stands 120m overlooking the city's skyline. Further south of the main city lies Umaid Bhawan Palace, which was built in 1929 by the British architect Henry Lanchester for the Maharaja of the time. Back at the hotel, relax by the pool and later dine in the picture-perfect courtyard after a day's sightseeing.

Raas is perfectly located to explore the windy alleyways around the markets and bizaars and the hotel itself has great views of the fort where you can hear the evening chants and prayers
