Best time to Visit
Good time to visit
Average time to visit
Isolated from much of India by the Western Ghats, the climate of Kerala & Karnataka is tropical and as a result of the mountain ranges the area isn’t as dry as much of India. The best time to visit is from January through to April. While there can be the occasional light showers these are just a prelude of the wet weather to come. The weather is generally hot and humid during this early summer. The monsoon season arrives in early June and thus can wash out July and August. September is much more humid as a result of the rainy season, and the fall can be dry but with the humidity this makes it feel quite warm. There can be a little rain in the night in October and November. The temperatures cool down and the humidity lets up as winter comes in around December, with this season lasting until February when the dry spring returns. Winter can be a pleasant time to visit, especially if you’re looking to head off the beach and explore the rest of this Indian land of mystery.

Tranquil is located in Sultans Battery in Northern Kerala, a stunning property set in a 400 acre coffee and vanilla plantation, a home stay experience like none other with just eight rooms and two luxury tree houses.
Tranquil is set in Wayanad, in northern Kerala and offers the chance to get away from it all and relax in a wonderful natural setting. Here the hotel's owners are always on hand to make sure your stay is as comfortable as possible. The main bungalow dates from the 1930s and has been restored and updated to a very comfortable standard, yet keeping the ambience of a plantation retreat.
The standard rooms are large, and offer modern amenities. Each features gorgeous wooden floors, ceilings and panelling and feature all the modern conveniences you'd expect of a luxury hotel. Suites have their own private garden but for the ultimate in peace and tranquility book yourself into one of the Tree villas which sit suspended high above the coffee plantation.
Days can be spent relaxing by the pool, or wandering through the plantation learning how the coffee is produced. For those who wish to go exploring, there are a number of different walks from Tranquil, from easy to more strenuous trails. Outside of the plantation guests can also visit the Muthanga National Park, or the close by Eddakal Caves. Here find some superb cave paintings dating from 3000 BC.
Tranquil offers guests ten rooms, ranging from standard rooms to tree villas. Each room is spacious and allows for total relaxation.
The Garden Rooms are housed in the annexe built by the then owners to accommodate friends and family. The building has been extensively renovated, retaining the ambience of a colonial planter’s bungalow. The rooms open out onto a large shared verandah overlooking the lush tropical gardens.
Located in the west wing of the main bungalow, the Deluxe room adjoins the patio and looks down over the swimming pool from a private verandah. The room is large, airy and has wooden floors, ceiling and paneling. For the convenience of guests, there are two individual bathrooms and dressing room ensuite.

Sophie Jones (Staff)
Driving up the windy road to Tranquil, I felt as though I was arriving at a private house. Then the greeting I received from hosts Victor and Jini and their daughter and son-in-law, Nisha and Ajay reinforced the feelings. A traditional plantation home, with beautifully maintained gardens, tucked into the hillside, surrounded by coffee, cardamom, and pepper crops, with bananas, mangoes, papayas and the largest avocadoes I have ever seen, all grown for the guests at Tranquil. The delightful staff lay out an impressive display of Keralan cuisine for each meal, but with dishes to appeal to other palates as well. The table in the family dining room is attractively laid with color napkins and hibiscus flowers. The outdoor pool and sun beds invite a bit of gentle exercise followed by a siesta. For the more adventurous there are a selection of walks through the 400 acre coffee plantation. The walks, with names such as Brave heart and Indiana Jones, can be enjoyed with the help of a map and sign posts (or in my case a ‘guide’ called Shadow, the family Boxer dog!), a good pair of walking shoes and some binoculars to view the wide variety of birds such as BeeEaters and Hornbills.
Backwaters - Experience Kumarakom
Kumarakom is a village based on the edge of Lake Vembanadu. The village is beautifully laid out over a number of different picturesque islands and is a wonderful example of how people live in the backwaters.

Boating in the splendid artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar river adds to the charm of the park. Spot some fascinating wildlife from the boat including animals coming to drink on the lake.
