Average time to visit

November to April are the best months to visit Kanchanaburi with the least rain. Temperatures stay moderately hot with the hottest weather in January to April. The wettest months are between July and September. Whilst the FloatHouse is open year-round, visitors should be aware that from June until October the water may be more muddy and turbulent so may not be suitable for swimming.

To start planning your vacation to The FloatHouse River Kwai Resort

The FloatHouse River Kwai is a wonderfully unique hotel. Set on the River Kwai, this hotel actually floats on the water. This amazing setting is an experience in itself, but the hotel also offers a good base to explore the surrounding countryside.

Given its rather extraordinary location, the FloatHouse River Kwai is usually accessed by boat. This means the adventure begins before you even reach the hotel, and the rest of your stay is sure to follow suit. The hotel is in a fixed location, floating on the famous River Kwai. However despite being over-water, guests need not worry - the hotel is very sturdy!

There are 30 floating villas, each made from teakwood with thatched roofs. Every villa has air-conditioning and a private deck facing the river. The decks have deckchairs and a bench swing, and so offer a lovely place to relax watching the river go by.

It is possible to jump into the river from your deck and float down to the end of the jetty before climbing back up (life jackets are recommended for this). The open areas and running water does mean this is only suitable for couple or families with older children.

There is a main restaurant which serves an international buffet for breakfast and lunch, and a la carte or set menu options for dinner. The food comforting and homely, and the atmosphere is relaxed.

Each villa at The FloatHouse is cheerfully but tastefully decorated in Thai folk style, with lots of natural materials. You will have your own deck with deckchairs and a bench swing. The rooms are air-conditioned and en-suite with rainshowers.

There are also some nice added comforts like tea and coffee making facilities and a 32" LCD TV with local and satellite channels as well as a DVD Player.

Some of the villas are able to interconnect, however this is only on request and so cannot be guaranteed. The sofa in each villa can be converted into an extra bed.

Given its location, and the fact that there are open sides to the river, The FloatHouse is only suitable for families with older children.

There is no pool, as guests can use the river for swimming. Wi-Fi is available, although this gets weaker the further you are from the reception area. There is a small open-air spa sala for treatments.

There is plenty to do during your stay at The FloatHouse. The resort is located only 200 meters from the Lawa Cave, which is the largest in Kanchanaburi. There are a number of chambers, each with dramatic stalagmites and stalactites. The cave is also home to the Kitti bat, which is the world's smallest bat species.

There are orchards to the back of the hotel, where you can take a pleasant stroll past tropical fruit trees, including jackfruit, mango, dragon fruit and durian. It is possible to canoe from the hotel's sister property back to the FloatHouse, which is downstream and takes roughly 40 minutes, and you can also take a leisurely cruise on a locally made bamboo raft.

There is a lot of history to explore in the area. Poignant evidence of the global stretch of World War II can be found at the War Cemetery and adjacent Thailand-Burma Railway Museum, where you can learn more about the plight of the POWs put to work here. You can also visit Hellfire Pass, where the POWs carved their way through the hillside to build the railway tracks.

Who wouldn't want the opportunity to stay at a floating hotel?! I fell in love with this place before I even arrived. The scenic journey to get there really helps to get you in the mood for an adventure, and when you arrive you are not disappointed.

OK, it is not the most glamorous option - the villas are very comfortable but fairly basic, although they do have things like tea and coffee and a TV. But getting to sit on your deck and watch the river go by is a lovely experience.

I also personally feel like Kanchanaburi is one of the most interesting places in Thailand, with a wonderful mixture of nature and culture - although the history is a sad one.

The Floathouse would combine perfectly with a couple of nights in Bangkok and then a beach hotel with some wow factor so you can still get that element of luxury.
