The Guangxi region experiences a subtropical climate, with short, cold winters and long, humid summers with monsoon rains. The majority of the rains fall in May and June, bringing with them intense humidity but turning the stunning landscape the most luscious shades of green. The winter months are damp and windy, with average temperatures hovering around 8°C. Spring and Fall are the prime times to visit Guanxi, with pleasant temperatures, sunny skies and minimal rainfall.

For those wishing to stay in Guilin itself rather than continuing onwards to nearby Yangshou the Shangri La is the best of the hotel options in town. The highlight of the hotel is the views of the Limestone Khasts over the river which runs past the hotel. The sunset from my room was spectacular. The hotel is very family friendly with a huge outdoor pool and play area, an indoor children's club and nightly entertainment. There is a huge buffet restaurant which is convenient if a little uninspired. Breakfast was very good although a bit chaotic and it was here that I saw more international tourists that at any other point during my time in China.

Located about 15 minutes outside of Guilin with incredible views over the limestone karsts of the area, the Shangri-La Guilin feels like an oasis. The hotel feels more like a resort than a city hotel with two fantastic pools, two restaurants, an atmospheric bar and lots of activities throughout the day. For me the setting of the hotel is really the highlight as waking up to that view over Guilin is memorising!

My flight into Guilin was delayed and so when I landed in the middle of the night, I was extremely tired and in need of a bed! When I pulled up outside of the Shangri La, I knew I was going to be well looked after. From the impressive lobby, to the stylish rooms with lovely views onto the Li River, and not to mention the tip top service (even in the middle of the night!), the Shangri La is an amazing hotel in this beautiful city.
