Description

The Sofitel Santa Clara is an exquisite 17th century converted convent and grand luxury hotel with excellent facilities in Cartagena in Colombia, one of the most beautiful colonial cities in South America, set against the blue waters of the Caribbean.

The Sofitel Santa Clara is located in the historic heart of Cartagena, a city declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Located on the Caribbean Sea, its colonial balconies and walled city hark back to the era of pirates, corsairs and Spanish traditions. This beautifully converted hotel has significant architectural value and has been divided into Colonial and Republican styles. During the restoration process many valuable artifacts were recovered and have now been used in the interior decoration. Each corner of the hotel has an important story to tell.

All the guest rooms have a view over the cobbled old city, the Caribbean Sea or the beautiful interior tropical courtyards, and are excellently equipped to satisfy the most exquisite of tastes. Cooling sea breezes flow through the hotels graceful arches and provide a respite from the Caribbean’s warm tropical climate.

The Sofitel Santa Clara also boasts two restaurants, the Refectorio that serves delicious French cuisine and El Claustro with a more international menu. Why not relax and unwind in the El Coro bar over a Caribbean cocktail or indulge in a one of the many treatments offered in the hotel's spa.

A great option for families, with its huge outdoor pool, airconditioning and connecting room options. The rooms with ocean views offer a beautiful and unique experience in the city, especially the suites with extensive balconies complete with dining facilities and a hot tub overlooking the Caribbean sea. The hotel is located within walking distance of some of the best attractions in Cartagena, and right in the heart of the picturesque old town - perfect for those who want to explore the gorgeous cobbled streets of the city by foot. The restaurant is a real delight - make sure to sample their fantastic fresh fish options.

I couldn't believe it when we pulled up at the beautiful historic building in the center of Cartagena's fortified town... this lovingly renovated convent dating from the 1600s was our hotel and has got it just right... keeping the traditional touches whilst offering every luxury and comfort you might want from a hotel.. fantastic service, wonderful bedrooms (the beds were so comfortable!) nearly all with balconies to enjoy the balmy temperature. Located right in the middle of the narrow streets full of colorful buildings, it was really easy to walk out to restaurants and bars as well as explore the history of this amazing place - I want to go back and stay longer next time!

Stepping into this converted convent is a bit like taking yourself back a hundred years, and like much of the city the building is full of colonial charm. The overgrown courtyard, surrounded by archways, stone floors and interior balconies is a lovely place to while away a few hours. The 119 rooms are divided between two parts; the 17th-century convent, and the newer “Republic” wing. Antiques fill the rooms of the older building, while the newer additions give guests a flavor of Republican Colombia with white walls and pale woods.

All rooms come with WiFi, and if you're feeling so inclined, you can catch a glimpse of Cartagena's most famous export—neighbor Gabriel Garcia Marquez's garden is visible from the top floors. Cartegena might be on the Caribbean coast, but this hotel feels much less ostentatious than some of its island counterparts. The large pool is relaxing rather than glitzy, and the old-world streets are a joy to wander—plus, where else would you find a resident toucan? A spa was added in 2006, so before dinner, head down for a work-out, Hammam, Jacuzzi or massage. Dinner is distinctly European, with French cuisine at El Refectorio, or more international offerings from El Claustro. Finish up with a cocktail and cigar in El Caro, or indulge all the gothic fantasies that staying in a convent evokes, and take a tour of the ancient crypt…spooky…
