The West Coast of Hawaii is the sunniest part of the island, and is a year round destination with a tropical climate, with the very best months being April to October. Temperatures are high throughout the year but never excessive, as humidity levels are manageable. There is a rainy season from December to March which is also ironically, the tourism high season, when the scenery is at its most lush and long, hot days break up the rainy spells.
Call us on to start planning your vacation to Puakea Ranch or take a look at our itineraries to Hawaii
Located in the quieter North Kohala district of Hawaii's Big Island, Puakea Ranch offers guests the opportunity to stay in historic homes and live more simply in a beautiful part of the island, with gentle breezes, ocean views and a home from home feel.
Located around an hour north of the airport on big Island, the small town of Hawi offers visitors an altogether more Hawaiian experience. Puakea Ranch is located in an elevated position just 2 miles south of the town, set back from the road allowing it to enjoy distant ocean views and a sense of quiet and seclusion you will find in few other places.
This isn’t a 5-star hotel experience; there’s no restaurants, gym, bars or 24 hour room service. Instead you have four lovingly restored historic cottages, each with a fascinating history to them from the days when this was a working ranch, and a homely feel as soon as you walk through the door.
The grounds are perfect for a morning wander. Visit the resident chickens (free range eggs for guests are complimentary) and take a look at the cottage garden, also available for guests to pick fresh grown vegetables and herbs to enjoy during their stay. Jays Pond is the communal rock pool, quietly tucked away for a daily dip and there are swings from the trees that can tempt even the most ardent adult into reliving their childhood.
Whether you are a couple looking for a tranquil bolthole to curl up and retreat to or a family who would love some quality time together away from the trappings of daily life, this is the place for you.
There is WiFi and TV but no mobile phone reception so you’ll be away from it all but not too much.
As for evening entertainment? Lie out on your porch and look up at the star filled sky and watch for shooting stars.
Please note that there are animals on the property which can sometimes roam free. Chickens, goats, pigs, horses and the hosts dog and cat. They are all friendly.
Please note that none of the homes have air conditioning, however, they do have ceiling fans and plenty of windows to let in the fresh breeze. They all feature full kitchens, BBQs, WiFi, Cable TV and blu-ray players. As they are historical buildings, these are not considered luxury and there may be the odd creaking floorboard or windows or doors that don’t close properly, this is all part of the character. Minimum stay is 3 nights.
There are just four cottages available, each historical with a unique character and a homely feel. All have a range of mod-cons to ensure a comfortable stay.
The largest of the homes and on the largest area, reached by a tree lined driveway at the top of the property, so enjoying distant ocean views. It offers a large open plan lounge / dining room / kitchen area and a wraparound veranda. There are two bedrooms (queen and twin) as well as an additional queen day bed in the lounge. There is an indoor bathroom and a private luxury bathhouse to one side of the veranda. There is also a large garden area complete with swing and small pool.
This is the most simple of the homes with just a small porch out the front. It was the original cowboy house and is the most interesting of all the homes. There’s an open plan lounge leading to a breakfast kitchen and then a small twin room and small queen bedroom either side. At the back there is a barrel hot tub perfect for evening dips and a luxury bathhouse. There is a third separate bedroom with en suite bathroom accessed from the porch.
Very secluded, Miles Away is ideal for a couple or family. A porch leads through to an open plan kitchen / lounge and then a queen bedroom and twin bedroom off this. There is an indoor toilet and then a luxurious outdoor bathhouse at the back. There is a BBQ and table and chairs on the veranda out the front for al fresco dining and a hammock and swing in the garden. To finish off, there’s a delightful rock plunge pool to one side.
A generous sized studio, this cottage is ideal for up to 2 guests and is predominantly for adults, boasting just one queen-sized bedroom. There is a spacious outdoor bath and large private tropical gardens to enjoy.
Families are very welcome at the ranch and the feeling is very much home from home with plenty of space to explore and run around in. There is one main rock pool style swimming pool and two of the homes have private plunge pools also.
There is a dedicated children's toy box room located next to Cowboy House which is a room filled with toys, games and books for children to enjoy during their stay.
There is no babysitting service.
There is a cottage garden for guests use as well as a communal pool in very pleasant surrounds and grounds for guests to explore. There is also a pre arrival grocery service for the homes and freshly laid eggs from the resident chickens are complimentary.
Your hosts offer a concierge service and can arrange private yoga classes, on site massage, horse riding and a host of activities in the area. Close by is the town of Hawi for dining out in the day and evening, as well as two local supermarkets for stocking up the kitchen. Guests can also depart on zipling, waterfall trips and ditch kayaking from Hawi. The nearest beach is around 20 minutes drive south and is a public beach.
Mauna Kea summit for amazing sunsets and star gazing is around 90 minutes drive away.

This is definitely not what I would consider our normal offering. This isn't a 5-star hotel, there's no room service or evening turn down, no selection of restaurants, activities, spa and gym, this is back to the simplicity of Hawaii and what it means to many, a special place, secluded and tranquil with beautiful ocean views and the night sky full of stars to stare at. Puakea Ranch is no longer a ranch but it used to be and the name remains, along with some of the original buildings which have now been lovingly converted by Christie and Josh, the owners, into delightful home from home cottages. Don't expect luxury trappings, the doors may well squeak, the windows may be a little draughty but character is here in style. There's no air conditioning, the historic nature of the cottages won't allow it, however, the cottages are designed to make the most of the cooling breezes that blow through and there's plenty of ceiling fans. It can get fairly warm in the summer months, however, evenings cool down and when I was there, I needed the duvet at night. There are 4 cottages, Yoshi's Cottage is the most private and the largest and comes with it's own large garden, tree swing and pool. Miles Away also has two bedrooms and a charming plunge pool and plenty of privacy. James Cottage is perfect for a couple and then Cowboy House, the most rustic. The grounds are home to chickens (eggs are free for guests) as well as the pet dog and cat as well as a pig and a couple of goats. Children will love the animals and the space and safety to roam. All should enjoy the laid back nature of this place, it's so quiet, yet close to the small town of Hawi and some really exciting and fun activities on the island, not to mention superb walking and stunning views. The only thing that it doesn't have is a beach, the nearest is a good 20 minute drive away, however, it has everything else in spades. If you want to get back to the real Hawaii in your own cosy cottage, whether you're a family or a couple looking for a little bolt hole, this place has got to be considered. I loved it, especially the stars, they were incredible during my stay.
