Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The city's peak seasons generally coincide with two activities: the sessions of Congress and springtime- starting with the appearance of the cherry blossoms along the Potomac.

Specifically, from about the second week in September until Thanksgiving, and again from about mid-January to June (when Congress is "in"), hotels are full with guests whose business takes them to Capitol Hill or to conferences. And mid-March through June traditionally is the most frenzied season, when families and school groups descend upon the city to see the cherry blossoms and enjoy Washington's sensational spring. Hotel rooms are at a premium and airfares tend to be higher. This is also a popular season for protest marches.

If crowds are a turn off, consider visiting Washington at the end of August/early September, when Congress is still "out" and families return home to get their children back to school, or between Thanksgiving and mid-January, when Congress leaves again and many people are ensconced in their own vacation-at-home celebrations. Hotel rates are cheapest at this time, too, and many hotels offer attractive packages.

If you're thinking of visiting in July and August, be forewarned: The weather is very hot and humid. Despite the heat, Independence Day (July 4th) in the capital is a spectacular celebration. Summer is also the season for outdoor concerts, festivals, parades, and other events.

Anna Northeast (Staff)

I stayed at the Capella in September 2014 as part of my very first visit to Washington DC. I'd been in the center of the city within a stone's throw of the White House for the first couple of days and wondered how I would find being a little further out. I shouldn't have worried, by heading to Georgetown I was heading to the very center of Washington buzz and life, not to mention the shopping! The Capella is in one of the best spots, right next to the canal and around the corner from the shopping and restaurant life. The welcome I got was warm and friendly, there's no front desk here, more of a living room that you relax into very quickly before minimal paperwork is completed and you are whisked to your room. The Personal Assistant information is discreet, no actual person to overwhelm, merely a number that you are encouraged to call any time for anything you need. My room was just fabulous, views out to the canal and a bathtub that looked just too beautiful to use! I wasted no time in tasting the delicate macaroons that had been placed in the room for my arrival, a nice touch and totally delicious, before taking the lift up to the roof top to see what else I could find. There was nobody else up there, this was an autumn day so I assumed everyone was out and about so I made the most of choosing the best spot to sit and enjoy my macaroons and a guide book to the area. The infinity pool looked inviting although I didn't jump in. It's small but I would imagine just perfect for hot summer days when you want to cool off. I would return to the roof top again and again during my short stay, it was my favorite place to be in after a day running around in the city. Peaceful, relaxed and with enough glimpses of the city to always remind me of where I was. I enjoyed a spot of lunch at The Grill. Traveling alone you often feel awkward dining alone but the welcome here was warm and genuine, friendly but not overly so that I felt like I stuck out on my own. The menu was great too, enough choice to get the taste buds tantalised and plenty of local flavors and vegetables. The complimentary bread was oh so lovely, I had to stop myself eating the lot before my salad arrived, which it did, nice and promptly and beautifully presented. It tasted as good as it looked and was promptly devoured before I turned my attention to gazing out at the canal in the mild autumn air. I liked this place, I really did. It's like they listened and learned and put everything in place, what service is. It's just right, always there but not in your face, warm and friendly, not stark like some 5 star hotels. This is a wonderful DC hotel and I wouldn't hesitate in staying here again and encouraging all my guests to do the same.
