Average time to visit

Belize's climate is marked by two distinct seasons, the rainy season (June to November) and the dry season (December to May). The coldest month is January and the warmest temperatures are in May.

The busier time of the year for travelers to Belize is November to May, which are the winter months of the Northern Hemisphere. It is possible to visit out-side of these months but the rainy season in the Forest Highlands can be rather wet.

Insider's View

To experience life on a tropical river, it's fun to take a canoe along the Macal River to San Ignacio, where staff will meet you and drive you back.

Try out the new Rainforest RTV Safari tour - a great way to explore the rainforest trails and spot some of the local wildlife.

Adventurous riders will love the horseback riding trails, start with a gentle stroll below the rustling palms and the spider and howler monkeys and then end your ride galloping through the jungle to a viewpoint on top of a Mayan site which overlooks the canopy.

Concoct your own cocktail from the array of infused rums displayed at the bar, my personal favorite was a basil and lemongrass infused rum caipirinha.

The Lodge at Chaa Creek is recognised as a perfect model of sustainable development within Belize’s rainforest and has won many awards for its approach towards responsible tourism.

The 23 thatch-roofed and stucco cottages reflect the traditional architecture of the region. Each cottage has beautiful Mexican tiled floors, large mahogany beds, original artwork and private bathrooms with hot showers. The two modern Ix Chel villas offer a truly luxurious experience, with Jacuzzis, al fresco showers, plunge pools and personal butler service, as well as hi-spec accommodation. Each has two bedrooms making them perfect for families or two couples traveling together.

There is a lovely restaurant serving a combination of modern and traditional cooking techniques with fresh local produce, much of which is sourced from the lodge's organic Mayan farm. The hilltop spa offers a perfect way to relax and unwind at the end of a day of discovery and exploration. There is also a large infinity swimming pool which is an inviting way to cool off.

The lodge has its very own stable of well-trained horses, allowing you to explore the heart of the reserve on horseback. What makes The Lodge at Chaa Creek so special is the lovely, warm unassuming atmosphere; an atmosphere which I imagine would have come about the day it opened in the 1980s and has remained unchanged all this time largely due to the lovely owners, Mick and Lucy, and their fantastic team. Having said that, this beautiful eco-friendly jungle lodge is not to be underestimated - in addition to their rustic cottages and suites they have recently opened the stunning Ix chel Villas which are the definition of luxury. Equipped with a private butler, AC, a jacuzzi, an infinity pool and 2 beautiful bedrooms overlooking the Macal River, you won't find accommodation more luxurious than this in the Cayo District. It's a great option for families or two couples to share.

Chaa Creek is a fantastic option for families. Their range of activities are extensive, including night wildlife walks, hiking, bicycles, kayaking, canoeing and many more, there is plenty to keep the whole family busy. And for a lazy day at the lodge their infinity pool is great for cooling off from the hot Belizean sun. There is no Wi-Fi or air-conditioning in the rooms.

I thought Chaa Creek was a good place for families to get a taste of the rich natural environment that Belize has to offer, and there are certainly plenty of activities to keep the children occupied, from river tubing to horse riding and nature trails. I liked the fact that there is a system of mountain bike paths that you can follow which will give you an idea of the variety of this large estate. Chaa Creek is jungle-light but offers all the facilities that you might want for a comfortable stay, and the treehouses are very nice, and a great place to see the wildlife wake up on the river.
