Botswana’s winter is May to October when the weather is hot during the day (not stiflingly hot) and cold at night. Botswana's summer months (November to April) can be hot and humid and there is a chance of rain. Botswana has one rainy season which runs between mid-December and runs through to mid-March.
Footsteps camp is located on the edge of a beautiful lagoon in the north of Botswana's Okavango Delta, where highly vocal hippos wallow. The three traditional safari tents are shaded by magnificent evergreen trees including Africa ebony and mangosteen.
Footsteps camp offers a traditional and adventurous safari experience in the Okavango Delta, focussing mainly on walking and low-impact activities. It is the base for four day walking safaris, as well as Ker & Downey's Young Explorers program which offers families a really interactive and educational safari.
There are three simple but comfortable meru tents here, one of which can accommodate three people. Each has twin beds and private ensuite bathrooms with a bucket shower and a flush toilet.
Delicious home-cooked meals are prepared in the bush kitchen and served under the shade of a tree or near the campfire in the evenings.
Both lions and wild dogs are often seen in the area and the variety of plains game includes kudu, zebra, and impala. Depending on the flood level you'll be able to take a ride in a mokoro, in which you travel through the maze of channels winding their way through the papyrus and water lilies. Walking with your guide is a real highlight and an entirely different experience to sitting in the comfort and security of a safari vehicle.
The Young Explorers family program is filled with educational and fun activities, from identifying paw prints to making bows and arrows, led by expertly trained guides who specialize in family safaris. There are activities to suit all ages, and even allow parents some peace and quiet while their youngsters are being entertained!
The minimum age for the walking safaris from here, known as Footsteps Across the Delta, is 16 years. The minimum age for the Young Explorers program is 7 years and activities are tailored to age-groups to ensure activities are fun and relevant.
Travel through the waterways of the Okavango Delta on a boat safari, exploring the papyrus reeds and hippo habitats with your guide. The smooth ride offers a soothing alternative to time spent in a vehicle. Always subject to water levels.
Fishing trips offer visitors to Botswana an opportunity to enjoy a different safari experience. In many areas the fishing is fantastic, you'll also enjoy fantastic wildlife and birdlife over your time on the water. NB not available within national parks.
Viewing wildlife from a vehicle is the best way to get up close to big game. Allow your professional safari guide to cover ground to guarantee you some unforgettable sightings in Africa's premier safari destination.
One of the best ways to see the big game of Botswana's Okavango Delta is on a game drive with a knowledgeable guide. Explore in open-sided vehicles to maximize your viewing opportunities, this is a truly wildlife rich environment.
The Okavango Delta is a vast patchwork of deep-water channels, shallow lagoons and date palm islands, fringed with the ubiquitous papyrus reeds. A doors-off scenic helicopter flight is an exhilarating way to take in these sights and a real treat, too!
Botswana's northern safari areas are full of water channels just waiting to be explored. Larger boats can be used to explore the wider channels but for the aficionado, mokoro trips into the smaller channels are a real treat. Always subject to waterlevels
Walking in the African bush with a professional safari guide is a fantastic experience. Enjoy a completely different perspective on foot than from a vehicle.
