The rainy season on the Lamu Coast is generally May/June. So from July onward the weather is gradually getting hotter and dryer until March/April when it reaches the high 90's (over40 degrees C). Christmas/New Year is generally considered the peak season and the weather is lovely from December to February with constant sunshine and gentle off shore breezes. November and March are shoulder months and typically the hottest times of year. June to October are the coolest months when snorkeling and fishing are not possible but days are sunny and families wishing to avoid the heat often find this a lovely time of year to stay.
Kizingoni Kaskazi House is imaginatively designed and sits back from the beach with wonderful sea views and is surrounded by landscaped tropical gardens. It can accommodate 12 guests and is fully staffed including a private chef.
Kizingoni Kaskazi House is set back from the beach but enjoys superb views of the beautiful Lamu coast, surrounded by landscaped gardens filled with coconut palms. The house is named after the northerly monsoon wind which for hundreds of years carried dhows from Lamu to India and Arabia, carrying spices and goods for trade.
The house design is built around four towers which face a central elevated infinity pool which measures 16 meters long. The front two towers house four bedrooms, while the back two house the master bedroom, kitchen and communal lounge areas. The towers are linked with shaded makuti thatch terraces, providing privacy for the swimming pool whilst still allowing a breeze to blow through and sway the hanging beds.
Kaskazi is a sociable house, with a welcoming bar and baraza seating area by the entrance, a spacious lower dining area, a rooftop dining space and lounge and plenty of space to relax poolside or dine under the stars.
There are four double bedrooms at Kaskazi House, as well as a triple bedroom and the massage room is able to be converted into a single bedroom. The master suite is accessed by a private staircase which winds upwards from the ground floor baraza area. It has large windows with which to enjoy views over the pool area and the ocean beyond, and an ensuite bathroom with an outdoor shower and al fresco bathtub. Two of the other double bedrooms are on the first floor of the front towers, each with a private veranda and ensuite bathrooms. The ground floor double bedroom is also ensuite and has a four poster Lamu bed, private veranda and French shutters leading onto the gardens. The triple room is on the ground floor and has an ensuite bathroom and three traditional Lamu beds and a private veranda.
Children of all ages are most welcome at Kaskazi House. However, there are no specific child care facilities but babysitting can easily be arranged. It is possible to tailor food requirements to children's tastes and arrange for earlier meal times if required. Lamu and the coast of Kenya is a wonderful place for a family vacation with calm safe waters, endless activities and plenty of cultural interaction.
The 16 meter infinity swimming pool provides the focal point of the house, with plenty of space to soak up the sun or lounge in the shade in a swinging bed nearby.
The house is fully staffed with your own chef, able to cater to your individual tastes. Dining can be enjoyed at the upper dining terrace, enjoying superb views out over the ocean, or downstairs near the bar at a beautiful communal teak table.
There are numerous chill-out areas here, too, known as barazas. Choose from an upper terrace to enjoy a perfect sunset view, a shady spot in the courtyard and the formal white washed baraza area. There is also a basement games room with table tennis table and darts board, and there is a TV room. The house also has massage room for anyone in need of a bit of pampering.
There are numerous activities here to enjoy, ranging from dhow sailing, fishing and water sports such as waterskiing, windsurfing, kayaking and stand up paddle boarding. Excursions to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lamu town are easily arranged, or you can head to the shops of nearby Shela village.
Kizingoni Kaskazi House is situated two degrees south of the Equator at the southern tip of Lamu Island, off the coast of Kenya. Kaskazi House is named after the northerly trade wind, and is set back from the beach on 1.5 acres of established garden.
