Tamgaly UNESCO Petroglyphs
Earning a UNESCO World Heritage Site status since 2004, the petroglyphs (rock carvings) of Tamgaly is one of the oldest and most striking monuments of Semirechye (Seven Rivers) rock art. Located along the Anrakay Mountains, the Tamgaly Gorge is home to over 5,000 drawings which can be traced back to the Bronze Age, with images of sun gods, warriors, married couples, pregnant women, as well as multi-figured compositions of people and animals, hunting scenes and scenes of animal sacrifice. Other than petroglyphs, a large number of ancient graves can also be found in Tamgaly.
