The turrets and towers of Neuschwanstein Castle, high in the hills of the southernmost part of Bavaria, are instantly recognisable as one of the most important sights of the Bavarian mountain landscape. King Ludwig built the castle as a private retreat and a homage to the composer Richard Wagner and to characters and settings in his operas. Its 'fairytale looks later led Walt Disney to use the castle as the inspiration for his 'Sleeping Beauty' castle.
