Fortress & Garden
The Roman fortification of Gonio-Apsaros Fortress sits adjacent to the Black Sea near the border with Turkey. The fortress bears influences of the Byzantine empire with a treasure trove of archaeological excavations unravelling interesting stories having taken place on the grounds of the Gonio-Apsaros Fortress.
Spanning 108 hectares, the Batumi Botanical Garden is the largest of its kind in the former Soviet Union. The garden was initiated by the Russian botanist Andrey Nikolayevich Krasnov and aided by French D'Alphonse and Georgian Yason Gordeziani before opening its door to the public in 1912. The garden showcases a wide variety of plants which can be grouped to 2,037 species, including 104 of which are of the Caucasian origin. However, it displays plants not only from the Caucasus, but also from the East Asia, New Zealand, South America, Mediterannean, Himalayas, Mexico and Australia.
