Average time to visit

Provence enjoys a pleasant, Mediterranean climate. On average, Provence gets 300 days of sunshine each year, with warm but mild temperatures. Summer is high season here, with August bringing the hottest weather and the biggest crowds. Spring is a great time of year, the weather is warm, with temperatures swaying between 16 and 20°C, and the crowds are small. If you want to see lavender fields then it would be best to visit the region in June. In October the weather starts to cool. Fall is also the start of the wettest weeks of the year. October sees an average of 3.7 inches of rain, with an average of three inches following in November. Still, it never gets all that chilly and snow is rare. Hotel Crillon Le Brave is closed in January and February.

This trip offers 3 days of hiking through a less trodden trail of Provence through beautiful landscapes, terraced vineyards, quaint enchanting French villages and lush forests. You will stay in small, authentic villages with comfortable and charming accommodation and sample delicious traditional Provencal cuisine with local wine. As you enjoy your walks, your luggage will be taken to your following hotel for you so that you can fully relax and let us take care of the logistics.

  1. Days 1-2: Provence

You will begin your itinerary in Avignon, the capital of Provence and the seat of the Popes for 170 years. This beautiful town is a haven for history and art and a fantastic introduction to your itinerary. Later on, you’ll enjoy a walking tour of this graceful city within a superbly-preserved stone ramparts. You’ll also have the opportunity to spend some time in Palais des Papes (The Pope’s Palace). The Palace was once home to a group of seven popes who were based here for 8 decades during the 14th Century.

    Accommodation: La Mirande (1 night)

  2. Days 2-4: Provence

Following a restful first night’s sleep, you’ll visit the city of Arles to retrace the footstep of Van Gogh, including, of course, the location where he gained his inspiration for one of his most famous paintings, “The Starry Night”.

You will then continue to Pont Du Gard, one of the world’s best-preserved Roman Aqueducts, before ending the day in the wine village of Gigondas, on the western side of the hills and checking into your hotel for the following 2 nights. The following day you will enjoy some beautiful hiking around the Dentelles, following the Randonnées du Pays & Tour des Dentelles de Montmirail. To begin your walk, you will firstly be transferred to Seguret, the stating point of the hike and a picturesque village that stretches in a narrow band around the flank of a solitary hill. Seguret is also known as an artists’ colony and here you will discover artisans making santons, which are delicate and detailed figurines in regional costumes. After time to enjoy lunch, you will continue by foot through the vine-laden hills, enjoying magnificent views over the Rhône valley, carpeted by a veritable sea of vines, before returning back to the hotel.

    Accommodation: Hotel Montmirail (2 nights)

  3. Days 4-5: Malaucene, France

Set off from your hotel this morning for a scenic hike enjoying the local surrounding hills overlooking Vacquerays. Atop a plateau adorned with vines and the ruins of a medieval church, we will make a stop to explore ancient grottos. After a while you’ll arrive in Beaumes-de-Venise, a delightful town famous for its sweet, white dessert wine.

In the afternoon, continue to Le Barroux, a picturesque village perched on a rocky outcrop and dominated by a huge feudal castle. The castle was restored first during the Renaissance, then again in the 1900’s, only to be destroyed in World War II.  After time to explore the beautiful village your hike continues before ended at Malaucene, a typical Provençal commune, before checking into your hotel for the night.

Accommodation: Domaine des Tilleuls (1 night)

  4. Days 5-7: Gordes, France

Your hike today starts from the village of Fontaine de Vaucluse. After exploring the mysterious spring, from which the emerald waters of Sorgue River begin, you’ll then set out on foot into the thyme-laden hills to a scenic crestline. Here, you’ll find a wall which was built in 1720 to protect Provence from the plague. After, continue to wak to the village of Cabrieres d’Avignon to enjoy lunch.

Your afternoon walking takes you along scenic paths lined with ancient stone walls and across the dry riverbed to reach the enchanting village of Gordes. This evening you’ll enjoy a delicious Michelin-starred dinner to replenish your appetite after a day’s walking. The next day you’ll discover the region of Luberon, featuring colorful houses, dramatically set villages and brilliant poppies fields, making this a popular area for visitors to Provence. You’ll also have chance to explore Gordes and to enjoy the breath-taking hilltop views from here. You will visit a working monastery, the Abbey de Senqanque, to see how the inhabitants here carry out their daily life. After, continue to Roussillon, with its beautiful colored houses, vibrant a poppy field and museum. We have then included an olive oil tasting in a local olive mill where you can discover how the oil is extracted and sample some of the produce. This evening, enjoy a farewell dinner as you savour the memories of the last few days.

For your final day you’ll have the opportunity to explore Marseille and enjoy a short city tour, including the vibrant port. Marseille is considered to be France’s gateway to Africa and is also France’s second-largest city.
