Average time to visit

From the subtropical lowlands in the south up to glacier-capped mountains in the north, Yunnan is a province of extremes. The climate varies so much across this vast and diverse area, that it has given rise to an ancient Chinese saying: “You can enjoy all four seasons on the same mountain, with each just a few miles from the next”. Generally speaking, most of Yunnan province is mild in winter and cool in summer, with large variances in temperature occurring across the day. Mornings can start with a wintery chill, and warm up to 25°C by lunchtime. Spring and Fall are mild and pleasant and the best times to visit Yunnan, despite May being the rainiest month of the year. For snow-capped mountains and dramatic alpine scenes, the winter months of November to January can be spectacular.

Itinerary

Our unique mobile glamping expedition brings you into the remote wilderness in search of the real Shangri-La, following the ancient Tea Horse trail into the heart of the Himalaya with views of Kawakarpo, Yading and finally ascending for a picnic lunch at Aboudje Lake.

  1. Days 1-3: Shangri-La

Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your lodge. At 3,280 meters above sea level, we recommend to take your first day easy as your body acclimatize to the high altitude.

As the new day beckons in the magical Shangri-La, we will visit Songzanlin Monastery, which remains as the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the province of Yunnan. Afterwards, we will make a trip to Tanwei Village to learn about the authentic Tibetan way of life. You may want to sample their local staples such as tsampa and butter tea!

Accommodation: Songtsam Shangri-la(lvgu) Lodge (2 nights)

  2. Days 3-6: Shangri-La

Taking a step into the Yunnan wilderness, we drive you into the Dabosi village which will be the starting point for your trek. Your first day walk will traverse through the Ringha Valley with excellent sights of Mount Shangri-La Sekha before camping at the Monk Grasslands at 3,690 meters. Today's walk will be 8km or approximately 3 hours.

On your second day, you will hike through rhododendron and fir forests which lead into viewpoints of major peaks such as Kawakarpo, Yading Mountains and the Aboudje Mountains. We retreat for the night at Muet Grassland at 3,750 meters. Today's walk is 15 kilometer or approximately 6 hours.

Third day welcomes you into the highlight as you circle the trail into the sacred Aboudje lake. Enjoy picnic on the lake shores before heading back to Muet Grassland. Today's walk is 20 kilometer or approximately 8 hours.

Finally, we conclude as you return through the pastures towards Ringha Valley for a picnic and onwards to Shangri-La. The walk will be 18km or approximately 7 hours.
