The vast province of Sichuan has a diverse and varied climate. The eastern lowlands of the Sichuan Basin have a tropical monsoon climate, characterized by humidity and fog. Winters are mild, summers are scorching, autumn is wet, and spring is dry and pleasant. The cities of Chengdu is famed for its fog, with the weather often likened to a damp day in London. The mountainous gorges and forested plains along the Yangtze River make autumn and spring the prime time for a Yangtze Cruise, with clear skies and pleasant temperatures making ideal sightseeing weather. Winter can be spectacular, despite the cold, when the water level is lower in the Three Gorges and the soaring cliffs even more dramatic.
