Shanghai and eastern China’s subtropical climate brings with it four distinct seasons. The weather is generally mild and temperate, with a great deal of rainfall even in the drier months of the year. The frequent monsoon showers and scorching temperatures of June, July and August can make it uncomfortably humid, with the mercury regularly rising over 35°C. Winter is overcast and chilly, although snow seldom falls in this eastern region of China. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best times to visit Shanghai and eastern China, with pleasant temperatures and fewer tourists.

Enjoy a traditional wupeng boat ride across the ancient Shaoxing, head into the rural countryside of Anji famed for the white tea and bamboo grove and conclude your journey in the picturesque Hangzhou which had inspired artists for centuries.

  1. Days 1-2: Water Towns

    Arriving into Shanghai, you will be picked up and transferred via bullet train to Shaoxing, a town lying just north of the Kuaiji Mountains and surged into prosperity during the Southern Song Dynasty.

    Here, you will enjoy a traditional wupeng boat ride across the ancient canals and visit the Keyan Scenic Areas. You will also make a stop at the former residence of Lu Xun. Learn how this iconic writer and poet became a leading figure of modern Chinese literature.

    The next morning, you will be transferred by car into the Futuo Zen Temple. Ascend into Xiao'en Pagoda for a serene view of the surrounding areas, and if you'd like, we can arrange a vegetarian meal with the practicing monks. Afterwards, enjoy a soul-cleansing hike through the ten-mile zen bamboo forest, which leads us into Dusong village with its ancient Hangxuan stone paths. Afterwards, you will be transferred into your accommodation in Anji.

  2. Days 2-4: Anji & Moganshan

    As the new day beckons, enjoy a morning Tai Chi lesson at Alila Anji (complimentary on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday), before continuing with a one-hour guided cycling along the countryside.

    We also cater seasonal hands-on activities depending on your time of visit:

    - Spring brings the local white tea field into full swing. Head out for an Anji white tea picking session and pack your white tea for a takeaway.

    - Summer activities are perfect for family bonding, such as rafting through the Shenxi canyon.

    - Fall is an excellent time to head to a local farm for a fun-filled chestnut picking activities.

    - Winter is delicious as you and your family head out into the bamboo forest to harvest young bamboo shoots and bring back your forages for your hotel chef to cook.

  3. Days 4-6: Hangzhou

    Finally, we head into the famed Hangzhou. Jump onboard a boat to sail into Leifeng Pagoda. Visit the beautiful traditional garden of Guo's Villa before heading into the China National Tea Museum. Here, your kids will learn into the long history and culture surrounding tea-drinking. Conclude the evening with the spectacular Impression of West Lake show.

    The next morning, we will move along the scenic Maojiabu village and the upper Tianzhu in search of ideal foraging grounds for the kids. The path is native to countless plant species of varying shapes and textures. As your kids engage in leaf-hunting, they will learn how to identify various plants based on appearance, touch and smell. Heading back into the city, enjoy a fun Chinese fan-painting or umbrella-painting session, which they get to keep as a gift!

    On your final day in Hangzhou, we head into the Hangzhou Cuisine Museum, filled with bite-sized mouth-watering replicas such as the Beggar's Chicken, Longjing Tea Shrimp and Dongpo Pork. Sometimes you may also be able to watch cooking performance!
