Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Perched high on the ‘roof of the world’, Tibet experiences a diverse plateau climate, with temperatures decreasing as you increase in altitude and latitude. Lhasa is pleasant year-round, with warm summers and chilly winters, but plenty of sunshine year round. Interestingly, most of the rain falls at night, making exploring the city a joy even during the rainier summer months. Due to its extreme altitude, Tibet experiences the strongest solar radiation in China, so you can expect plenty of sunshine! The winter months are predictably cold, with a surprising lack of snow for such a mountainous region. Temperature variations in a 24-hour period can be startling, often showcasing ‘four seasons in one day’ so be sure to pack plenty of layers for your Tibetan adventure.

This unique itinerary brings you out from the standard circuit into Eastern Tibet with its pristine beauty and spring peach blossoms which had earned itself the nickname "Switzerland of Tibet" before you immerse in the culture and history of Lhasa; all while basing in the very best international-standard hotels.

  1. Days 1-2: Chengdu, China

Spend your first night in Chengdu, where you will receive your Tibetan permit and rest for the night before your next morning flight.

Accommodation: Chengdu Airport Hotel (1 night)

  2. Days 2-4: Nyingchi

Arriving into Nyingchi, take it easy as you acclimatize to the high elevation. The next day, you will have two options:

Option 1: Start from Lamaling Monastery and you will be driven across the Sekyim La Pass for a breathtaking view of the sky-piercing Mount Namjia Bamwa which peaks at a staggering 7,700 meters. Afterwards, we continue into Lulang Valley where you can hike through the villages with a backdrop of lush meadows and snow-capped mountains.

Option 2: Enjoy the Peach Blossom Festival at Gala Village (usually around middle or late March until late April), where you can participate in activities such as archery, dancing or horse racing. The road to Gala Village is exceptionally beautiful with hundreds of peach trees alongside the valley.

Your final day in Nyingchi begins in the Cypress Tree Reserve, home to a 2,500-year-old tree which stretches 50 meter high! Afterwards, we enjoy a boat ride at Basong Tso Lake with the beautiful Tsodzong island monastery. The road continue into Mila Pass, a high point of 5,013 meters strewn with Tibetan prayer flags and scenic views of sacred Tibetan mountains surrounding it, before finally ending in Lhasa.

Accommodation: Hilton Linzhi Resort (2 nights)

  3. Days 4-7: Lhasa

As the capital of Tibet, Lhasa is a treasure trove of culture to unravel. You will visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Potala Palace, the bustling market of Lhasa at Barkhor Square and the Jokhang Monastery which forms the most important religious heart of Tibetan Buddhism.

We spend another day in Lhasa to explore the capital in greater depth, including a stunning hike in Ganden Monastery, an interesting monk debating session in Sera Monastery and a visit to the Tibet Museum to browse the exhibit of Tibetan treasures.

Accommodation: The St.Regis Lhasa Resort (3 nights)
