The southern provinces of Hunan, Fujian and Guangzhou are all subject to a humid, subtropical monsoon climate. Weather across these lush areas is typified by long, humid and sweltering summers that bring typhoons, and short, mild winters. Hunnan’s average temperature hovers around 17°C, and the stunning scenery around Zhangjiajie National Forest Park changes with the seasons. The autumn months can be particularly beautiful, with the colorful changing leaves. The coastal province of Fujian experiences some of the heaviest rainfall in China, with the typhoon season falling in the month of August when temperatures and humidity are also at their peak. The same can be said for Guangzhou, making the best seasons to travel to these two subtropical provinces spring and autumn.

Itinerary

Fujian hides plenty of surprises for you to discover. Retreat into the UNESCO-listed tulou roundhouses, sip the world's most expensive Dahongpao tea, raft down the Nine-Curve Stream of Mount Wuyi, discover the Maritime Silk Road history in Quanzhou and stroll along the charming Gulangyu Island.

  1. Fly into Quanzhou

  2. Days 1-2: Quanzhou

    Your journey begins in Quanzhou, once a prosperous trading port visited by legendary travelers such as Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta.

    Unravel cultural sites such as Kaiyuan Temple, unique for being a Buddhist-Hindu temple with intricate carvings surrounding its Twin Pagodas. Afterwards, we head to the Maritime Museum to learn the prestigious history of Quanzhou as a major port along the Maritime Silk Road.

    We will also visit the Qingjing Mosque, originally built for the Arab Muslims during the Song Dynasty. Time-permitting, we can visit Xunpu, known for its traditional villages built with oyster shells.

  3. Days 2-2: Train to Wuyishan

  4. Days 2-5: Wuyishan

    A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Wuyishan is famed as a sacred Taoist mountain. Enjoy a bamboo rafting experience down the Nine-Curve Stream as you admire the picturesque karst mountains. You will visit the renowned Taoist palace of Wuyi before scaling up the Tianyou Peak to admire the scenic mountain vista of the area.

    We spend another day to explore Dahongpao Tea Plantation. Lightly fermented and only growing in the Wuyi mountain area, Dahongpao is famed as the world's most expensive tea and is traditionally served only the highest guest-of-honors. Afterwards, enjoy a stroll along the stone-paved streets of Xiamei Ancient Village.

  5. Days 5-5: Train to Nanjing

  6. Days 5-7: Tulou

    From Nanjing train station, it is another 1.5-2 hours of driving by road to your retreat at the Taxia village, known for its Hakka rural dwellings shaped into earthen roundhouses. Your resort hosts a variety of in-resort activities which you may want to participate in at your own account.

    We have included a full-day exploration of Yongding Tulou, which is the largest cluster of earthen building roundhouses in Fujian and its most impressive. Visit the famous Yongding Cultural Village and gain a deeper understanding of the subtle differences between each type of earth houses. Pass over the mountain and enter Shuyang Town to visit the Tianluokeng Earth House Cluster, nicknamed as "Four Dishes and One Soup", the usual postcard picture of the area. End the tour with a visit to the oldest and the biggest Yuchang Lou.

    You will also enjoy exploration of Hegui Lou, a square-shaped Tulou, Huaiyuan Lou which is a double-ring protected Hakka house, as well as Changjiao Ancient Village for a snapshot of rural countryside life in Fujian, before finally arriving into Xiamen.

  7. Fly home from Xiamen

  8. Days 7-8: Xiamen

    Arriving into Xiamen, you will visit the South Putuo Temple and the popular Eight Seafood Market.

    On your final day, we enjoy a 20-minute boat ride to Gulang Yu island, where you can enjoy a tranquil walk along the lovely Shuzhuang Garden, admire the famous piano collections from all over the world at Piano Museum, and proceed to Hi Heaven, which is the longest-existing and largest villa on the island.

    As you board your boat back into Xiamen, we bid goodbye to the magnificent Fujian as we transfer you into the airport for your flight home.

  • Essential Yongding Tulou

    Visit various earth house clusters and dive deep into the history and culture of these architectural wonders. Sights include Yongding Hakka Cultural Village and Tianluokeng Earth Houses. End the tour with Yuchang Lou, the oldest and biggest of its type.

  • Hegui Lou & Changjiao Village

    Enjoy a half day exploration of Tulou houses. Visit Hegui Lou, a square shaped Tulou as well as Huaiyuan Lou, a double-ring protected Hakka house. Continue to Changjiao Ancient Village and step back in time into a Chinese traditional rural life.

  • Wuyishan National Park Full Day Tour

    Embark on a full day tour of Wuyishan National Park. Discover Wuyishan from a unique perspective as you float down the Nine-curve stream on a bamboo raft. Visit Wuyi Palace and conquer Tianyou Peak for a wonderful view of the mountains and river.

  • Xiamen City & Gulang Yu Island Day Tour

    Today, visit Gulang Yu Island and explore Shuzhuang Garden, the famous Piano Museum and Hi Heaven, the oldest and largest villa on the island. Return to Xiamen and start your city tour to South Putuo Temple and the Eighth Seafood Market.
