This family self-drive adventure is the perfect way to take in the highlights of Ontario, a region which is brimming with opportunities for adventure such as canoeing, helicopter rides, hiking and fantastic wildlife viewing. Ontario is ideally visited in the summer months making it perfect for the school vacations and the autumn colors make September a fantastic choice too.
Begin your journey in Toronto, a colorful city with a thriving art and food scene and many attractions which will get the whole family raring to go. Stay three nights at the Ritz Carlton which boasts an enviable downtown location and is ideally located for a bicycle tour to get your bearings. Pedal around at a leisurely pace and take in the key sights including the waterfront, Kensington Market and Chinatown. We have also included a visit to the iconic CN Tower which dominates Toronto’s skyline; brave a walk across the glass floor, embark on the motion theater ride and take in the amazing views from the top.
The following day, pick up your 4x4 hire car from a convenient downtown location and embark on the road to Algonquin Provincial Park. After a three-hour drive you will greeted by picturesque lakes and stunning parkland, surrounded by greenery and fresh country air. Your three-day canoeing adventure starts today as you get kitted out and learn the ropes, paddling across the water accompanied by your knowledgeable guide. Camp out at night amongst red pine forests for a perfect wilderness experience and get up close to moose, beavers and herons by day. Along with canoeing you will have opportunity to jump into the water for a refreshing swim, do a spot of hiking or fishing or even relax around the campfire. The atmosphere on the expedition is really friendly and the food is wholesome and fresh.
Your next stop is Muskoka Lakes; a region surrounded by towering pines and sparkling waters just a 1.5 hour drive away. Stay in one of the many Muskoka cottages for a relaxing seven-night stay and enjoy water sports and forest activities aplenty. Your cottage will be handpicked to suit your family so you can truly enjoy the sense of being at home; many come equipped with a variety of games such as table football and air hockey, kayaks and snorkeling equipment, fishing equipment and some even have fire pits and floating decks for relaxing evenings spent by the water. This week will be entirely at your leisure allowing you to unwind completely before moving onto Ontario’s breath-taking Natural Wonder, the Niagara Falls.
The charming town of Niagara on the Lake is approximately a 1.5 hour drive from Muskoka and acts as the gateway to the impressive falls. Stay at the family-friendly 124 on Queen, a comfortable and contemporary hotel offering villa-style accommodation. There is a delicious restaurant on site for those who prefer not to self-cater and a number of dining options close by in the town giving you complete flexibility. No stay here would be complete without swooping over the thundering waters in a helicopter – undoubtedly the best way to take in the magnificent scenery. The flight lasts for around ten minutes and is an exhilarating experience! Relaxed and content after two nights in Niagara you will drop your car at Toronto airport (approx. 1.5 hours’ drive) ready to connect with your flight home.
