Average time to visit

It is very difficult to predict the weather in the United Kingdom - in the summer from May to late September is generally seen as the most pleasant time to visit. Rainfall is difficult to predict - but the UK does not receive as much as many are led to believe! In the winters, temperatures do fall, but there is nothing better than finding a pub with a roaring fire to sit beside after a long walk.

Set in the heart of the glorious Lake District, Gilpin Hotel & Lake House is a very special place. Whether as a family-friendly retreat or as a romantic escape, a stay at Gilpin Hotel offers superb fine dining, personalised service and true seclusion.

Run by the Cunliffe family, whose ethos of creating a retreat of warmth, friendliness and authentic luxury pervades the property, Gilpin Hotel & Lake House is a gorgeous Lake District hotel consisting of two separate estates above Lake Windermere.

The original house forms the main hotel, which is full of historic charm with an Arts & Crafts style balanced by contemporary touches. Here there are 14 rooms, each uniquely styled and all offering space, natural light and patio doors that open out onto lovely gardens. The rooms are a stylish blend of glamour and homeliness, with plenty of nice touches from the fresh flowers to books and carefully chosen rugs and pictures. In a separate annexe, six garden suites are more contemporary in style, but come with the added advantage of private decking and cedarwood hot tubs. All rooms in the main house have great views.

A mile away Gilpin Lake House is a stylish rural sanctuary, where six suites provide exclusive access to 100 acres of private grounds, including a beautiful small private lake, boat house, swimming pool, salt snug, hot tubs and spa treatment room overlooking the lake. An air of tranquility and intimacy pervades the Lake House. If you are staying here, breakfasts are served here and a complimentary chauffeur will take you up to the main house for dinner.

Dining at Gilpin (included within your stay) is a real highlight. There are three elegantly simple dining rooms, each with their own character and style, along with a bar, lounge and outside terraces to enjoy lunch, afternoon tea or simply a morning coffee. Relax with a cocktail in the bar or on the terraces before being shown through to dinner, where the refreshingly unstuffy waiters serve up delicious dishes that celebrate the finest Cumbrian produce from seafood to Herdwick lamb. Every table has fresh flowers, candles at night, crisp white linen, fine china and glass, and gleaming silver.

At Gilpin you can be as active or relaxed as you choose. In between enjoying revitalising spa treatments and enjoying the gorgeous surroundings, you can head for the boathouse and have a row on the lake or stroll up nearby Cat Crag for an extraordinary panorama of the Lake District that reaches as far as the Isle of Man on a clear day. The ever-helpful concierge can also arrange horse riding, fly-fishing, sailing and mountain biking, and golfers can play a round at nearby Windermere Golf Club. Best of all, though, is heading out for a long fell walk, knowing that you have wonderful hospitality, the comfort of a roaring fire and an outstanding dinner waiting for you on your return.

There are 20 rooms available in the main hotel and also six suites in the Lake House along with its own Spa with heated indoor pool, many treatment options and 100 acres of exclusive grounds. Staying in these suites, a complimentary chauffeur will take you for dinner at the Gilpin Hotel. In the hotel, rooms are split into four categories, Classic Rooms, Master Rooms, Junior Suites and Garden Suites. All options feature a sitting area, flat screen TVs, mini bars, tea and coffee facilities, luxury toiletries, home-made biscuits and a flask of iced water, but no room is the same as another in layout or their exquisite decor. Rooms offer the finest fabrics and furnishings with a real sense luxury.

The Classic Rooms

There are three of these rooms located in the main hotel. A modest 20sqm, these rooms are a quaint option including a combined shower and bath in their bathrooms, large windows letting in plenty of light and affording great views of the gardens, moors and courtyard. Each room is individual in its decor. Crook at the far end of the east wing has been furnished with Scottish tartans and rich mahogany, Crosthwaite has a lighter and greyish colour scheme with hand-printed wallpaper and Rydal has been painted in Farrow & Ball creams, greens and aquamarine.

Master Rooms

Located mainly on the first floor of the main house there are five rooms of this category, approximately 25msq with original Georgian features. These rooms have either queen or king size beds, garden views and all but one have a separate bath and shower. Lyth is decorated with bold fabrics of warm oranges and azure blues. Winster has one of the prettiest views in the house and uses pale silks with accents of caramel. Cleabarrow has a huge 8-ft wide bay window and a gold, brown, cream and pale green palette. Wetherlam is on the second floor and so its bathroom is in the eaves, has a very lofty and light feel using pine furniture and touches of lilac. Finally Heathwaite is French provincial in style with cream furniture and again huge windows.

Junior Suites

There are six junior suites, all of which are located in their own wing and have patio doors leading onto the gardens and outdoor tables and chairs. Most rooms have a king-size bed and large bathrooms with walk-in showers and spa baths (Kentmere has a normal bath). Troutbeck has great views in three different directions and Grassmere uses rich and warm colours to complement antique mahogany furniture. Patterdale is light and airy whilst Thirlmere has an antique Moroccan queen size bed and is split level like Grassmere adding extra depth.

Garden Suites

These six suites are the most spacious option in the hotel (45sqm) and feature king-size beds and separate bathrooms with walk-in showers and beautiful bathtubs. As their name suggests, from the cosy interior with living area and fireplace, patio doors lead onto decked gardens and a submerged cedarwood hot tub. Cat Bells has its own garden and uses a range of coffee shades, Crinkle Crags features an eclectic but warm decor with Middle Eastern and African influences and faces south like the Dollywagon Pike suite. Haystacks' interior is reminiscent of Amazonian forests with a tree trunk coffee table and shares afternoon sunlight with St Sunday Crag. Finally Sergeant Man is a suite with complete privacy, serene decor and high ceilings.

Gilpin Lake House Suites

There are six suites in the Lake House, all open plan, two rooms with en-suite showers and four with both shower and bath. Harriet has huge windows overlooking Knipe Tarn and an ivory, taupe and walnut colour scheme. Maude is very spacious, does not have a bath tub but a great feature fireplace and views down the Lyth Valley. Gertie has hand-printed gold wallpaper, elegant textiles and views as far as Morecambe Bay. Beatrice Suite overlooks the lake and woodland and comes with its own entrance and staircase. Ethel is the smaller of the Lake House Suites but is tucked away in its own corner of the house. Finally, Adgie faces woodland through its patio doors and is the other suite without a bath.

Gilpin welcomes children over the age of seven.

Facilities at Gilpin are great, the Lake House Jetty Spa overlooking the private lake offers a range of spa options and treatments whilst guest passes are issued to guests to visit the Old England Spa on Lake Windermere should they wish to make use of the swimming pool and gym facilities there. Fine dining with locally sourced produce is served at the Gilpin Restaurant and matched with wines from the walk-in cellar (home to 200 wines). Enjoy your breakfast, lunch, dinner, afternoon tea or an exquisitely prepared tasting menu served in one of the hotel's three dining rooms. There is also an extensive bar list available to order from in the bar itself or on the terrace and The Lounge is not only beautifully designed but also wonderfully comfortable and stocked with books, magazines and newspapers. In addition to the six acres of gardens at Gilpin there is a lawn which can be used for croquet and a llama paddock.
