Luxury Turkmenistan Holidays 2020/2021

Mysterious and often bizarre, Turkmenistan is the least visited of all the Central Asian countries. Best known for the eccentric dictator, Saparmurat Niyazov, who has decorated the capital city of Ashgabat with grandiose golden monuments, this mysterious land is also home to burning craters, vast deserts and ancient Silk Road cities, where the warmth of the Turkmen people is legendary.

The enigmatic desert republic of Turkmenistan is often overlooked by visitors, but for the intrepid few that journey across this fascinating country, there are treasures to be found. Evidence of the late president Saparmurat Niyazov’s cult of personality are abundant, particularly in the quirky capital of Ashgabat, with its marble palaces and gilded statues celebrating the former ‘Turkmenbashi’. The cotton growing region of Mary a modern centre of industry in Turkmenistan, but nearby you’ll discover the ancient ruins of Merv, once a cornerstone of the Islamic world and one of the most important cities along the Silk Road. Thought to have been the largest city in the world at one point in history, this former metropolis was razed to the ground by a Bukharan king in the 1700s, leaving only a footprint of this once great city hidden in the dusty plains. Deep in the vast Karakum Desert you’ll discover the burning Darvaza Gas Crater, and the Turkomen tribespeople who still live a semi-nomadic existence amongst the rolling dunes. The UNESCO listed city of Konye-Urgench lies in the northwest of the country, on the banks of the Amu-Daria River. The crumbling monuments date back as far as the 11th century, with minarets, a mosque and a fortified settlement still visible in this otherwise stark and deserted landscape. Along with vast swathes of deserted terrain, unusual monuments and a rich history, the hospitality of the locals is legendary, and will reward any visitor to this curious, ancient land.
