Zeravshan Valley
The verdant Zeravshan Valley lies at the foot of the Fann Mountains, fed by a river of the same name. Home to the ancient Sogdian city of Penjikent, the stunning Seven Lakes of Marguzor that cascade down the Shing Valley and the starting point for any adventure into the high mountains passes and ice-capped peaks of the Fanns.

The fertile plains of the Zeravshan Valley make it one of the most populous parts of Tajikistan, and in times gone by it was an important stop on the ancient Silk Road. The city of Penjikent is surrounded by stunning flora and fauna (particularly birdlife) and was the heart of the Sogdian empire before it was destroyed by Arab raiders in the 8th century. The ruins of ancient Penjikent still remain, and the city’s modern reincarnation is used as a base to explore the spectacular mountainous terrain and alpine lakes that lie to the south.
