For a fantastic family getaway, explore the wilderness of Swedish Lapland with a few days spent soaking up the culture in Stockholm. A real winter wonderland, Sweden truly has it all, from the colourful cobbled streets of Stockholm to the wild landscapes of Lapland and the magical Northern Lights. Here, history and culture meet natural beauty and adrenaline-packed activities.
Begin this arctic adventure in Stockholm, where the 14 islands of the archipelago are packed with history dating back centuries. Explore the winding streets of the Old Town, Gamla Stan, where vibrant buildings are interspersed with Gothic cathedrals and one of the largest Royal Palaces in the world. There is plenty here to entertain families, from the Vasa Museum, home to a 17th century warrior ship which sank on its maiden journey, to the city's unique museum dedicated to the Viking Age.
After spending two nights in Stockholm, fly north to Kiruna, where your journey through Lapland begins. Your home for the night will be the famous Ice Hotel, built each winter using natural ice from the nearby River Torne. Explore the hotel, admiring the intricate artwork in each of the Art Suites, where every room has been individually designed by guest artists, before trying your hand at truly unique activities such as ice sculpting or testing your wilderness survival skills. We have included a husky sledding experience for the whole family where you’ll meet the dogs, learn the commands and set off on a sled ride through the forest.
Following this once-in-a-lifetime experience, continue south by train to Pine Bay Lodge, perched on the coast of the Luleå Archipelago, which is frozen over in winter. This boutique lodge offers simple and comfortable accommodation and is the perfect base for a plethora of winter activities. Adrenaline junkies can speed across the frozen lake on a hovercraft or snowmobile under the Northern Lights, while those looking for a more leisurely pace can try and make a catch while ice fishing or explore the forest on snowshoes.
The final stop of the adventure is at the nearby Treehotel, where you'll spend two nights perched in the forest canopy in your one-of-a-kind treehouse. Choose between creative designs such as a Birds Nest, Dragonfly or UFO and enjoy the excitement of sleeping in the trees in addition to the incredible views of the surrounding landscape. We have included a snowmobile adventure for the whole family when, after a brief instruction, you’ll roar up the engines and speed off into the snowy wilderness. Discover the culture of the north with a visit to a nearby Sami village, learning about the traditions of these indigenous reindeer herders, or try Nordic ski touring through the forests. For a truly special final night, enjoy a delicious three-course dinner tucked away in a heated tipi on top of a frozen lake, and look out for the Northern Lights dancing through the night sky.
A fat bike is similar to a Mountain bike yet has larger wheels, allowing you to cycle across soft surfaces. You'll be accompanied by a guide who will lead you where to go, showcasing the very best of the surrounding forest.
A trip to Lapland would not be complete without an encounter with some furry huskies. Meet the huskies and their owner and watch them be harnessed before taking off on a thrilling sled ride on forest trails.
Venture out under the moonlight to a nearby lake, where you can spend an evening dining atop the frozen waters. After a three-course dinner in a heated tipi, you'll have the chance to spot the beautiful yet elusive Northern Lights.
A must-do when staying at the iconic Ice Hotel, try carving an ice sculpture of your own in an introductory sculpting class. Using the same ice as the hotel is made from, you'll learn the techniques and then be able to test your creativity!
Take a snowmobile or 4x4 across the snowy landscape in search of the Northern Lights. Once darkness has fallen, head away from the lights and towards the Lappish wilderness. If the weather is clear, you will hopefully see the Lights dancing!
