Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Spring (March-April) and Autumn (October-November) are the most ideal time to visit the Silk Road. It is best to avoid summer months between June and August when daily temperatures may hit as high as 40-50°C. Winters are generally mild and dry, but may get chilly in the open desert and Northern areas of the country.

Itinerary

Traverse from the Kazakh metropolitan of Almaty through legendary Silk Road cities of Uzbekistan, the eccentric nation of Turkmenistan with burning Darvaza crater, and ending with Russia's iconic sights. Exact itinerary may slightly differ depending on your departure dates.

  1. Days 1-13: Uzbekistan

Start in Almaty. Stroll through Panfilov Park, Zenkhov Cathedral and Chimbulak ski resort for a cable car ride with spectacular views of Almaty and the handsome Tien Shan mountains.

Continue to Tashkent. See the Old Town, Railway Museum and one of Islam’s most sacred relics – the world’s oldest Koran.

Explore Samarkand, a majestic Silk Road city with the enormous Registan Square, the refined elegance of Bibi Khanum Mosque and the Ulugh Beg astronomical observatory.

Bukhara mesmerizes with a visit to The Ark (a fortified residence of the Emirs of Bukhara) and the enchanting Palace of the Moon and Stars.

In the 7th century, Merv served as a base for Muslim expansion into Central Asia. The ancient oasis briefly became one of the world's largest cities.

Ashgabat's extravagant fountains, golden domes and towering modern buildings appear strangely incongruous in this desert setting. Highlights include the National Museum and Kipchak Mosque.

The 70 metre wide crater of Darvaza is known by the locals as the 'Door to Hell' and has been burning for over 40 years. A unique experience not to be missed.

Khiva looks like a scene straight from the pages of 1001 Nights. Beneath the vivid blue-glazed bands of the Kalta Minor minaret, stroll through the city’s winding streets on a dreamlike tour of palaces, blue-tiled domes, minarets, mausoleums and madrasahs.

Formerly Stalingrad, Volgograd was the dramatic scene of Second World War battles. Visit the poignantly sobering Mamayev Kurgan war memorial and a museum visit.

Arrive at Moscow, our final city. Take in the grandeur of the Kremlin, the treasures of the Tsars in the Armoury Chamber, the iconic Red Square, the ornate St Basil’s Cathedral’s magnificent onion-domed spires and the sombre Lenin’s tomb.

Alternatively, travel out to Sergiev Posad with its beautiful Russian Orthodox Church and State Tretyakov Gallery.
