Game viewing is excellent all year round. Summers (October to March) are hot and wet, were as winters (May to August) are cool and dry. Daytime temperatures in summer are high and may soar above 36°C/97°F. Winter is known to produce beautiful warm days, though the evenings and early mornings can be quite chilly.
Garden Route enjoys a moderate climate all year round. In peak summer season, from December to February, temperatures can climb as high as 34ºC, although winter temperatures can drop to as low as 4ºC. Generally, this season has many sunny days with high wind at times. During the winter months of June, July, and August, expect frequent rains and a couple of chilly evenings. From June to December, the Southern Right Whale (Eubalaena australis) graces Walker Bay with its massive presence.
South Africa is the perfect destination for the whole family. Avoiding the malarial areas, this itinerary takes you on an exciting safari and along the scenic coast of the Garden Route to enjoy a wealth of outdoor activities everyone can enjoy, from hiking and boat trips, to tours of the local reserves. End the trip in Cape Town with days spent exploring the Mother City.
Your family adventure begins as you land in Port Elizabeth after a stop-over and change in Johannesburg. Here you will be met by your driver who will collect you and take you to the Shamwari Private Game Reserve located in the Eastern Cape. Located around an hour from Port Elizabeth Airport, Shamwari is a Big 5 reserve and can offer some excellent and varied game viewing across 25,000 hectares. You will spend three nights in Shamwari Riverdene with all game activities and food and drink included for the whole family. The lodge and reserve are family friendly and Shamwari offers a Kids on Safari Program so the whole family can enjoy a stay.
Each morning you will wake early and after some tea, coffee and snacks you will head out on a game drive in an open safari vehicle with your guide. Your guide will be on hand to find an incredible array of animals, from giraffe, lion and zebra to cheetah and elephant. You will then return to the lodge for breakfast and have the rest of your morning at your leisure. After a late lunch served at the lodge you will meet with your guide again for an afternoon game drive where you will have a stop for some sundowners before continuing into the evening. Back at the lodge a hearty dinner will be served after a day on safari.
This morning you will meet your driver-guide who will be with you for the rest of the trip and will leave Shamwari after breakfast and drive to the coastal town of Knysna located along the Garden Route. You will spend the next two nights here in a boutique hotel overlooking the Knysna lagoon with breakfast included. Kynsna is a sleepy town and is perfect for outdoor activities on and off the lagoon. The next morning we have arranged for an eco-experience on the Knysna lagoon where you will catch a ferry to the Western Head where you will disembark the vessel and jump in a 4x4 vehicle to explore the reserve. Stop for lunch in an outdoor restaurant before returning to the mainland by ferry. This afternoon you will have some time at the Knysna Waterfront before going on an educational oyster experience (weather permitting) where you will be able to taste the difference between wild and cultivated oysters.
Continuing your South African road trip along the coast, you will head west via Mossel Bay where you could visit South Africa’s first post office located in this beautiful little town. Your next stop is Grootbos Private Nature Reserve where you will spend the next two nights with food and drink and activities on the reserve included. This is a beautiful area of South Africa and the lodge where you are staying has excellent views across the Walker Bay Nature Reserve. Explore the area with a guide who will point out the beautiful unique fynbos of the area and any bird life you might come across. This area of the coast also offers some incredible land based whale watching, when during June to December you can stand along the coastline and watch as southern right whales migrate and breach with young.
Leaving Grootbos your driver-guide will drive you to Stellenbosch in the Winelands via Hermanus. In Stellenbosch you will arrive in time for a cycling experience in the picturesque Devon Valley, a scenic experience allowing you to soak up beautiful views, and indulge in some delicious food and wine along the way. After your tour you will have some time to explore Stellenbosch before making your way to Cape Town where you will spend your final two nights on the Waterfront in a self-catered apartment. Perfect for the whole family, self-catering in Cape Town gives you complete freedom to eat when you like, as well as being able to sample some of the delicious food on offer.
The next day you will meet your driver-guide and head to the city centre for your 'Footsteps to Freedom' guided walking tour. This tour is the perfect opportunity to learn more about the dramatic history of Cape Town and to visit some of the famous and historical sites.
Table Mountain, at 1086 metres above sea level, forms the impressive backdrop to Cape Town. An impressive natural landmark with a 3km flat plateau at the summit, a cable car trip to the top is the best way to experience its breathtaking views.
