An 8-day itinerary which takes in Peru's essential highlights
Explore Machu Picchu with a private guide
Discover the highlights of the Sacred Valley, soaking in amazing scenery
April to October is best for time for visiting Peru’s Andean region and main highlights. It is typically sunny in the day and cold at night due to altitude. Heavy rains last from December to end of February with January and February being the wettest months.
A perfect introduction to Peru's essential highlights, this 8-day itinerary is ideal for anyone short on time. Take in Lima, the culinary capital, before spending some time in the jaw-dropping Sacred valley, visiting cultural highlights, local markets and the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, before enjoying some time in the colonial city of Cuzco, a charming place to end your trip.
Your itinerary begins in Peru's capital city, Lima, where we recommend two nights to relax following your international flight. Lima is home to some of Latin America's top restaurants which receive global praise and are well worth a try during your stay. We have included a full day of sightseeing with a private guide, taking in the highlights of the colonial centre, the Larco museum (which is arguably the best) and the bohemian neighbourhood of Barranco, stepping into MATE which houses photographer Mario Testino's collection.
Fly to Cuzco where you will be transferred straight into the Sacred valley of the Incas, stopping at Pisac on the way to your hotel which is home to some ruins and a famous artisan market. The following day your guide will accompany you to the salt pans of Maras which sit perched amongst the Andes and the archaeological site of Moray.
On departing your hotel in the Scared Valley, you will board the Vistadome train bound for Machu Picchu. Admire the scenery as you make your way to Aguas Calientes as the base of this world wonder, switching onto a bus which will get you to the gates. Enjoy a privately guided tour of Machu Picchu and learn about how and why it was built, soaking in its breathtaking setting. Spend the night in a hotel in Aguas Calientes before returning to the site to hike up Huayna Picchu for even more jaw-dropping views from above the ruins. Return to Cuzco by train.
On arrival at Cuzco's train station you will be transferred to your hotel in the heart of the historic centre where you will have two nights to enjoy all that this charming city has to offer. Explore the highlights with a guide and discover the impressive collection of Inca ruins which are all within walking distance of the main plaza. Lunch is included at a local restaurant. You can then enjoy time at leisure to visit the city's many boutiques and markets or enjoy the vivid nightlife before being transferred to the airport in time for your flight home.
